Claire M. (Shea) Sullivan, 95, of Nashua, widow of former Nashua Mayor Dennis J. Sullivan, passed away Thursday morning, January 12, 2017 at the Courville at Nashua after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Sullivan was born in Claremont, NH on August 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Daniel W. and Alada (Nolin) Shea. After moving to Nashua in 1933, Claire resided in the Crown Hill neighborhood for over eighty years. She attended local schools, was a graduate of Nashua High School Class of 1939 and furthered her education at Simmons College where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in business.
Claire had been employed with the former New England Bobbin & Shuttle Company and Greenerd Arbor Press and Machine Company both in Nashua. She later worked at the rectory of St. Patrick Church for several years.
She loved spending time at Rye Beach and also travelled to Canada and Ireland. Claire also enjoyed antiquing and was always interested in politics; especially assisting her husband with his many mayoral elections.
Claire and her husband Dennis were married in 1951 and shared twenty-seven years together until his passing in 1978. She was also predeceased by her brother, James D. Shea in 1995 and her sister, Patricia M. Shea in 1999.
Members of her family include four sisters-in-law, E. Rita Shea of Hudson, Jacqueline Sullivan of Merrimack, Beverly McKay of Nashua and Bea Sullivan of Dover, NH; many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Kathleen and Albert Ahlman, Kevin and Sandra Shea and Terence and Diane Shea; grandniece, Amanda Ahlman; grandnephew, Benjamin Shea; and cousin Marilyn Deerfield of Naples, FL.
Her family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staffs of Home Instead Senior Care, Visiting Nurses Hospice Care of Manchester and Courville at Nashua for their excellent care of Claire.
Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Tuesday evening, January 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 29 Spring Street, Nashua, Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery in Hudson. Friends are invited to attend and will gather at the church. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 313 Washington Street, Ste 310, Newton, MA 02458.
