Robert T. Ravenelle

Ravenelle, robert

Robert Theodore “Bob” Ravenelle passed away peacefully Sunday April 23, 2017 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, after a three year battle with cancer.

A Nashua native, Bob was born on March 9, 1940 to the late Raymond & Yvonne (Rondeau) Ravenelle.

In the mid-1950s he attended Nashua High School and was part of the offensive line that won the state football championship under coach and local legend Charles “Buzz” Harvey.

After graduating in 1958, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and in 1960 enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served both in the U.S. and in Europe before being discharged in 1962.

In 1965, Bob became a Nashua Police Officer and after a 20 year career with many assignments, including being part of Nashua’s first SRT/SWAT Team in 1974, Bob retired as a Lieutenant in 1985. He then spent over two decades as the Director of Public Safety at Daniel Webster College.

In his leisure time and later years, Bob loved watching and complaining about all the local professional sports teams. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and vacationing at the seacoast. His love for bagpipe music was exceeded only by his love for his only grandchild, whom he doted on every chance that he could.

Bob is survived by his two sons, Robert T. II and Stephen, both of Nashua; his granddaughter Jacqueline Ravenelle and her fiancé Steven Ploetz, both of Topsham, ME. He is also survived by many loving cousins, both locally and in several other states, including Ted Ravenelle and his wife Pat of Burke, Virginia and Madeleine Lesondak of California.

The Ravenelle family wishes to thank the many members of the various departments of the local law enforcement community, especially the Nashua Police Department, who came and visited with a member of the “Old Guard” during his final days. It is a fitting testament to “Ravy’s” legacy, and to the bonds of professionalism and brotherhood that exist between those who “Protect and Serve”. We will be forever touched.

Calling hours will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27th at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua. A mass of Christian Burial will take place the following day, Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Nashua. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that memorial donations be made to the Nashua Police Relief Association, at P.O. Box 3011, Nashua, NH 03061, the Nashua Police Athletic League at 52 Ash Street, Nashua, NH 03060, or Home Health & Hospice Care at 7 Executive Park Drive, Merrimack, NH 03054.Arrangements are in the care of the FARWELL FUNERAL SERVICE, 18 Lock Street, Nashua. Being a student at DWC who enjoyed my time at college I got the opportunity to "Meet" Bob pretty quickly my freshman year, he was very tough but he was always fair. As I got older my trips to Bobs office actually increased, however they were more to get life advice or just to shoot the breeze! He loved to tell me stories of the older brothers of my Fraternity, and was always proud to let me know he also had one of our pledge sticks which brothers before me had presented him. No trip back to the school was complete without stopping in to see him. My wife, Holly (Bacon) and I will miss him dearly. He embodied every characteristic he preached to the students. Most of all he was a friend! RIP Bob we will all miss you, and I did steal the road sign from the cafe, sorry.

Bob's passing is a great loss. Our families have been intertwined since my father and uncle attended high school with him in the 50's. Then in 1997 he hired me as a campus safety officer and gave me a wonderful opportunity. In 2003, I met a woman named Tara working in his office and three years later we married in the center of Daniel Webster College campus. His love of family and loyalty to friends is an example I will always admire and follow. I'm grateful for his influence and he has been role model in so many ways. My family will miss him dearly.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob in Jan '94 when I transferred to DWC. As a transplant from WA state, I was a little bit of an oddity, and certainly had a lot to learn about the Nashua area and New England in general. A quick friendship developed, as Bob gave me the lay of the land, so to speak. Simply put, the man was a salt of the earth kinda guy. The best memories I have of Bob is him speaking so highly of his sons and granddaughter. Just the mention of his children put a smile on his face, and it was clear that his family was always his #1 priority. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family in the New England area.

I had the pleasure of working for Bob briefly as a security officer at DWC before going on into law enforcement full time. He had the respect of the entire campus community; including the students. I took his sage life advise to heart and hope I have lived up to his standards. Rest in peace "303".

As Campus Safety Director at Daniel Webster College, Bob hired me in February 2002. I always admired his easy going character, he really made me feel like I belonged. Even under the stress of the job, I never saw Bob angry. Whether you just met him or knew him awhile, Bob was very much liked; he was affectionately known as the "Ravster". I have missed Bob since he retired from the College in 2005 however he did resume the reigns as Director for a short time when we were between Directors (Bob just could not be replaced). And talk about heart, Bob and his son Rob have extended an invite to me and our friend Gerry Moore (also a former Safety Officer) on more than one occasion to join his family at Bob's house for Thanksgiving dinner (good eating) and of course, watching football. Yes, there are many things I admired about this man both personally and professionally suffice it say my favorite quote from the Ravster "absolutely". Bob you will be absolutely missed and remembered always. My prayers to out to Bob's family. I am happy knowing Bob really enjoyed his retirement. Its been an honor knowing and working for you Bob, goodbye and God speed.
