GEORGE J. SMITH

Smith, George J.

George J. “Smitty” Smith of Nashua, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly Tuesday evening, June 14, 2016 during his battle with lung cancer, just a few days before his 89th birthday.

A resident of Nashua for many years, George was born in Bedford, NH on June 24, 1927, son of George W. and Annie (Concannon) Smith. Educated in Bedford and Manchester schools, Mr. Smith served in the Navy during World War II as a Ship’s Cook, Third Class from July 1944 until his honorable discharge in August 1946.

George had been employed as a supervisor with the former Hampshire Manufacturing Company in Nashua for a number of years. He was a workaholic until the day he could no longer physically work, but there was never a time he wasn’t there to spend time with his family. George was the most patient, giving, caring father and grandfather anyone could have been blessed with, and there was never anything he wouldn’t do for those he cared for.

George always enjoyed being outside in his yard or keeping busy working on the house, but more so taking day trips with his family to the beach and mountains, eating greasy cheeseburgers with the dog, and spoiling his inseparable favorite person, his granddaughter Chelsea. His spare time was spent watching westerns and the Patriots, and doing his daily crosswords. George left an immense void in our lives and hearts that will never be filled, and have lost an unconditional best friend that will never be replaced.

On October 16, 1948, George married Marjorie Trudel, a Nashua native, whom he shared 66 wonderful years together until “Margie’s” passing on May 17, 2015. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Cindy Smith; and his brothers and sisters.

Members of his family include two daughters, Jennifer J. Smith of Manchester, NH and Lucy Ann Smith of Easton, MA; a granddaughter, Chelsea Smith; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Normand Francoeur of Raymond, NH, Theodore H. “Ted” Trudel Jr. and his wife Lee of Nashua, Richard and Carol Trudel of Baton Rouge, LA, and Therese D. Trudel of Nashua; also many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Christopher Church, 62 Manchester Street, Nashua, Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Hampshire S.P.C.A., 104 Portsmouth Ave, Stratham, NH 03885 or to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, 155 E 55th Street, Ste. 6h, New York, NY 10022.
