Robert J. Dinan, 91, of Chester, NJ, a native and former Nashua resident, passed away Monday afternoon, July 18, 2016, at the Sunrise Hospice of Basking Ridge, NJ, after a period of declining health.
A son of the late James and Amy (Kitchener) Dinan, he was born in Nashua on June 19, 1925. Bob attended the former Sacred Heart School and was a graduate of Nashua High School, Class of 1942. He was a former communicant of St. Patrick Church where he served as an Altar Boy. In February 1943, Bob joined the Army and served with the 8th Air Force in Europe during World War II until his honorable discharge in February 1946. He continued his education at Lowell Technical Institute now the University of Massachusetts at Lowell where he earned an Associate’s degree in engineering in 1948.
In the late 1940s, Mr. Dinan began his career as an engineer in the textile industry with J.P. Stevens of Lowell, MA and worked in several locations during his 50 years there.
A resident of Chester, NJ, Mr. Dinan also made his home in North Andover and Worcester, MA, Ellicott City, MD, Macon, GA and Clearwater, FL. Bob was an avid golfer and baseball fan of the Boston Red Sox. He was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9643 of Largo, FL.
In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his former wife, Jeannette J. (Farland) Dinan of Nashua, who passed away in September 2003; a son, Robert J. Dinan Jr. in 1954; and his sisters, Geraldine McAuliffe, Elinor Casey and Elizabeth “Betty” Spencer Giles.
Members of his family include five children, Donald N. Dinan and his wife Amy of Washington, DC, James G. Dinan and his wife Elizabeth, Dr. William Dinan and his wife Tracey and Mary Anne Dinan all of New York City, and Barbara Guiltenan and her husband Edward of Chester, NJ; also eleven grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Thursday July 21st from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 29 Spring Street, Nashua, Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. followed by interment at St. Patrick Cemetery in Hudson.
