I am so grateful for the time I was able to spend caring for Barbara. She was an amazing woman. The strength she showed facing that terrible disease was awe inspiring. I loved her snort of laughter and lovely smile, among many other things. It was good to witness the rest present love of her family. Most especially her wonderful husband Raymond. God bless her.

Tribute to my beloved mom.: Mom wanted only the best for her children. The very best. She was a woman of vision in a wonderful, unique way, a wonderfully HUMBLE way. My days in Carmel, NY with mom were some of the best of my life. Shue heard one day that I wanted to be a nurse...so she was right there, finding out how I could become a candy striper-volunteer at Putnam Community Hospital. She or dad made sure I was one of them drove me me to every shift I did as a little striper; even when I left the birthstone ring they had given me one birthday on the sink in the hospital restroom, (and was I sad about that!), she didn’t scold: she quietly waited a few years and ceremoniously one Christmas gave me another new blue birthstone. Then one summer between my freshman & junior year of high school, I was shy about romping around with a bunch of middle schoolers right around my age...but she said it would be good for me to do it for a summer so I would be able to understand kids better as a nurse, even though there were 4 sibs below me! Accompanying mom to the thrift shop at the little Methodist Church in downtown Carmel — we loved looking for bargains together for all of us kids. She became close to the ladies in the shop and may have even volunteered there too. Having my friends over was never a chore for mom either - she happily fed them and just found that simple, loving pleasure in knowing I was hanging out with Maureen, Noreen, and Leonora Carney from St. James Elementary. Then Sue Thorne, & Jane from Carmel High. She encouraged our friendships and their moms and some of them, like Gloria Thorne, came to know her through becoming buds in local charities. At St. James Church, even when all 6 of us were still quite little, mom was in the Altar & Rosary Society, lovingly changing the altar flowers each week and making sure Raymond had a clean, ironed cassock for serving Mass that Sunday. Another happy time in mom’s Carmel days was visiting our Stauble cousins, Aunt Agnes and Uncle Ron across town. My we had many birthday celebrations together, both in early times in Scarsdale when Raymond, Mary and I were really little, and later in Carmel. She and Aunt Agnès planned things carefully and with lots of love. Later in Maine, we would still continue to see them. Then too I’ll always remember the joy mom had flying out with Mary and I, to see our Ryan cousins and my godparents, Uncle Bill, her brother, & Aunt Alice, in 1969. After all, Raymond flew to Chicago with her to see Grandma & Grandpa Ryan...so it was our turn to see some Ryans. Then there was mom’s silence in these last 3-1/2 years of her life. When she could no longer speak, she listened. She tuned in with her eyes. To quote Robert Cardinal Sarah from his book, “The Power of Silence”, ‘The sentiments that emerge from a silent heart are expressed in harmony and silence. Silence is man’s greatest freedom. No dictatorship, no war, no barbarism, (and not even Parkinson’s Disease) could take this divine treasure from her’. Yes she listened: to her sister, Mary’s voice, on the phone, her eyes wide as saucers with every loving word she heard: she looked, she listened, and she cherished, without doubt. To Fr. Peter Guerin’s presence on Sundays for 3 years: through his visits from St. Anselm College, she grew in spiritual closeness to the Creator she would soon meet. And to the joy and visits of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, well, there’s no doubt she wanted to reach out and hug them...but she watched and considered them all from the power of her silence. Laudate gloriam, in praise of Him; sweet goodbyes dear mother. Remember all of us here below, as you voice your prayers for us above. Louise
