Mary E. Maguire, 95, a native and longtime Nashua resident, passed away Saturday afternoon, October 6, 2018 at the Wentworth Senior Living in Portsmouth.
A daughter of the late Daniel L. and Madeline (Donlon) Maguire, she was born in Nashua on November 10, 1922. Mary was a graduate of Nashua High School Class of 1942, earned her A.B. from Rivier College in 1947 and her Master’s Degree from Middlebury College in 1950. She also did further graduate study at Harvard University.
Mary began her career as a Latin teacher in private schools in Virginia, Connecticut and Massachusetts. She later was Consulting Editor of the Houghton Mifflin Company of Boston until 1978 when she returned to reside in Nashua and worked as a proofreader and copyeditor at PC&F in Hudson and with Puritan Press/ Hollis Publishing in Hollis.
She was a political, antiwar, and social-change activist; was involved in Amnesty International, Southern Poverty Law Center; American Civil Liberties Union; served as deputy chair, Nashua Democratic City Committee; and served on the Board of Directors of the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union.
Members of her family include a niece, Tracy Maguire Robinson of Englewood, CO; three nephews, Charles D. Maguire, Jr. of Englewood, CO, Daniel L. Maguire of Houston, TX and Dr. Paul L. Maguire of Rye, NH; and eleven grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brother, Charles D. Maguire, Sr. who passed away in 2003.
There are no calling hours. A Graveside Service will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 6 Bishop Road, Ayer, MA, Saturday morning, November 10th at 11 o’clock.
