Brian S. McCarthy, 64, of Nashua, President of the Nashua Board of Alderman and prominent figure in the community, passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning, November 5, 2018.
A resident of Nashua since 1980, Brian was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 26, 1954, a son of the late John Robert and Virginia (Hobson) McCarthy. During his youth, Brian and his family resided in Pearl River, New York where he attended Pearl River High School. He was a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Brian enjoyed a long and successful career as a software engineer. Brian started his career with Digital Equipment Corporation, devoting twenty-five years to them through the mergers and other corporate changes. For the last seventeen years, he worked for NetApp in Waltham, MA.
His interest in local politics began with his time on the Nashua Zoning Board of Adjustment from 1993-1994. Brian then served five terms as the Ward 5 Alderman from 1994 to 2004. Since then, he has served as Alderman at Large and served multiple terms as Aldermanic President. Brian provided leadership and support for several developments across Nashua, including creation of the Broad Street Parkway, purchase of Pennichuck Waterworks, construction of Nashua’s two high schools, and working to set aside conservation land in southwest Nashua. Most recently, Brian took a special interest in supporting development of the Nashua Center for the Performing Arts.
In his leisure time, Brian enjoyed aviation, astronomy, fly fishing and cooking. He also was an avid Boston Sports fan and a Ham radio operator with the call letters “N1ZZD.” Brian was also a member of AMSAT, an organization which advocates for the advancement of space science, education, and technology.
Members of his family include his wife of 43 years, Gloria E. (Zalewski) McCarthy, whom he married on June 14, 1975; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Alicia McCarthy of Onset, MA; his daughter, Kimberly McCarthy of Merrimack; a sister-in-law, Marion McCarthy and a niece, Myra Anderson both of Burien, Washington. In addition to his parents, Brian was predeceased by his brother, Douglas McCarthy.
Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Friday, November 9th from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Saturday morning at 10 o’clock in the Keefe Center for the Arts at the Elm Street Middle School. Interment will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend.
