Elizabeth “Betty” (Buxton) Burns, 99, a lifelong resident of Hudson, passed away Friday evening, February 14, 2020 at the Brudnick Center in Peabody, MA.
Born in Hudson on February 17, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Paul Westcott Buxton and Hazel (Reynolds) Buxton. Betty graduated from Nashua High School, Class of 1937. She furthered her education at the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work in 1941. She worked for the State of New Hampshire Welfare Administration before starting her family in 1947.
Betty cherished her days working at Benson’s Wild Animal Park in the summers of 1936-1938 and her bond with Betsy their elephant. She was also very proud of her participation in establishing the first Hudson children’s library in 1966.
She held her real estate broker’s license from 1969 to 1999 and enjoyed her work as a broker in the Hudson/Nashua area.
Betty was the wife of the late Richard Masters Burns of Whitefield, NH who predeceased her in 1984. Betty and Dick married in 1942 and built the house at 4 Cummings Street in Hudson where they raised their family. They enjoyed square dancing every Saturday night for many years.
Betty also loved crafts, crocheting and contract bridge, or any other card game.
She made many friends at the Senior Center of Nashua over a good game of cards.
Members of her family include her daughter, Anne Louise Lewis and her husband Christopher Lewis of Gloucester, MA; her son, John Buxton Burns of Hudson; her grandson, Ian Paul Johnson and his wife Nira Johnson of Wendell, NC; her granddaughter, Kimberly Elizabeth Johnson of Boston, MA, and her great-granddaughter, Olivia Miriam Johnson of Wendell, NC. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her brother, Robert Charles Buxton.
There are no calling hours. A private family graveside service will be held at Hills Farms Cemetery in Hudson, in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of Benson Park, PO Box 91, Hudson, NH 03051.
