James Robert “Jim” Rotta, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Boston, MA on April 26, 2023.

Jim was born in Manhattan on July 18, 1938 and grew up in Riverdale, New York. Despite leaving New York in his mid ‘20s, Jim was a New Yorker at heart and retained lifelong friendships with his pals from the neighborhood.

Following his graduation from Manhattan College, Jim went to medical school at the National University College Galway in Galway, Ireland and formed a life-long love of the country where he returned many times throughout his life. It was there that he started a family with his first wife, Alice J. (Griffin) and where his eldest child, John was born.

After returning to the United States, Jim and Alice had two more children, James and Shelagh. Following an Internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA, Jim completed his residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.  Jim ultimately settled in Nashua, New Hampshire where he established a successful Urology practice serving Nashua and the surrounding communities for 50 years until his retirement in 2016.

Jim also leaves behind his devoted 2nd wife of 25 years, Denyse (Quinn). After retiring the couple moved to Boston. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Jill (John); son-in-law, Peter (Shelagh); and grandchildren, Emmi, Jack and Primo, who he adored. Jim was predeceased by his father Charles; mother Vasilika, and brother Nicholas.

Jim will always be remembered for his passion for medicine and commitment to his patients. He endeared himself to those who knew him with his dry humor, infectious laugh and love of cooking, which he shared with his family.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 13th at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher Church, 62 Manchester Street, Nashua, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s memory to the Inker Family Fund for Dialysis at Tufts Medical Center(https://giving.tuftsmedicalcenter.org/give). Dr Rotta was my best and favorite doctor of a bunch of physicians who help a woman with Multiple Sclerosis manage a disease that affects the entire body. Dr Rotta was so funny and so learned, and so happy to go into detail about the systems and processes that affect the urinary system. We had a frank and uncensored therapeutic relationship and I will never forget his kindness and excellent rapport with his grateful patient, who misses him to this day.

John, James and Shush- prayers and positive thoughts with the passing of your Dad. I hope you find peace and can embrace the good, fun memories of your Dad. I remember talking football with Jim when I was young and taking a lot of ribbing about the Patriots, it was easy back then for a Giants fan! Be well, and may your Dad rest in peace...

I have so many wonderful memories of Jim working beside him for almost 10 years. Our kids grew up at the same time and I got to see first hand what a kind and compassionate physician he was. I called him a friend more than a boss. He will be missed.

Dr. Rotta performed my kidney surgery when I was 26, yo-yo effect (thought it was a joke until I looked it up)! He was the most caring Dr. I truly enjoyed his sense of humor and compassion My deepest condolences for your loss. May memories bring you peace

My husband (John Heaney) was a patient of Dr. Rotta's. One night my husband's temperature spiked to 105 degrees and we went immediately to St. Joseph's Emergency Room. Dr. Rotta (and his wife) were at some Event and the Emergency Room called him to tell him of John's medical condition. Dr. Rotta CAME to the Emergency Room in his Tuxedo... My husband had Sepsis and I believe Dr. Rotta saved his life. He was a caring doctor. Mrs. John Heaney

I enjoyed my many conversations with Dr Rotta during my many years working in the medical field together. I interacted with him while I worked in the ER and on the switchboard at St Joseph Hospital. I am very sorry for your families loss and feel badly that Dr Rotta did not get to have the long and healthy retirement that he do deserved, prayers to you all during a very sad time of loss.

Even though we hadn't seen him in many years he always remained Uncle Jimmy to us. We will always remember his so fondly. My dad summed it up nicely: "Just a really really great guy." Our condolences to all of you during this time. xox The O'Toole Family.

Dr. Rotta was one of my Dad and Mom’s best friends for many years. Our families had so many wonderful memories growing up together in Nashua. In recent years my daughter Kaitlyn got to spend some special moments with Dr. Rotta both in Nashua and Boston. I will cherish those memories, too. My condolences go out to the entire Rotta family and their friends. Lots of love always, Debbi (Wrobleski) Taylor XO

I became Jimmy's 1st "little sister", he's words! And boy did my big brother spoil me, along with my big sister Alice! I was lucky to spend my summer holidays for years between the Rotta's and the O'Toole's in Canada. What wonderful memories of those days I have, along with the times I spent with Jimmy when he came back to our home in Galway. I will miss my "brother". Till we meet again, love you Jimmy! John, James and Shush my thoughts are with you and your families. xxxxx
