HOUSEMAN, MARILYN K

Marilyn Kay Houseman, 86, of Nashua, New Hampshire, passed peacefully on December 18, 2023.

She was born in Michigan in 1937 to Iris and Robert Lapo and spent summers with her grandparents on their farm, riding horses and sharing a bicycle with a chicken named Wanda. Marilyn met the love of her life and husband of 65 years, Ronald J. Houseman, in Hastings, MI. They became high school sweethearts before attending the University of Michigan. Throughout their lives, they moved 17 times and lived across the country, embarking on many adventures and raising a family. They had three children together: Brad, who passed as a young child; Laurel; and Dirk. They also have one granddaughter, Brooke.

Hawaii; Denver, CO; and Nashua, NH were among Marilyn’s favorite places to live. She and Ron were avid travelers, journeying to Europe and China together. With friends, Marilyn traveled to South America, Thailand, and Singapore. With their son and daughter in law, Dirk and Karen Houseman, Marilyn and Ron traveled to Alaska and Ireland, and with her daughter, Laurel, she traveled to England and rode across the United States on a bicycle trip. Even in 2023, Marilyn continued to have a strong sense of adventure, and she and Ron enjoyed a weekend trip with their granddaughter, Brooke, and her husband, Erik Hanson, to Woodstock, VT.

Marilyn was a highly skilled cook and baker, and won numerous recipe competitions with beloved favorites like her homemade apple pie. Her family will carry on her culinary legacy through the recipes in her cookbook, Mom’s Best Recipes, which she created with the help of her son in law, Christopher Baerman.

She spent many summers in her gardens in Nashua, NH and on Drakes Island in Wells, ME, where she cultivated beautiful flowers and spotted every weed. Throughout her life, she also created intricately-crafted needlepoint pieces, including Christmas stockings for her son, daughter, and granddaughter, and scenes from beloved stories and travel destinations. When her children were young, she sewed their clothing. Marilyn researched her family’s genealogy extensively, discovering long lost relatives and making contact with new family members. She valued her community, and was a member of Nashua’s Good Cheer Society and King’s Daughters.

Marilyn Houseman is survived by her husband, Ronald J. Houseman; her children, Laurel Baerman and Dirk Houseman; and her granddaughter, Brooke Baerman. Her family will carry her memory and her love with them forever.

Ron and family, what a lovely tribute to Marilyn. She was such an accomplished woman; that bike ride was amazing! I remember you both sharing Christmas Pudding which Marilyn was famous for and it was delicious! You are blessed with so many happy years and memories. Blessings to you all. Pat

I do not have the precise memory and recall as Dirk, but I do have some reflections to share of my memories of Marilyn. She was sort of a Den Mother to me in high school. Providing counsel, snacks, and trampoline access. Many visual memories of her in the kitchen cooking something wonderful and Ron at the dining room table eating stewed prunes. She shared her basement for countless sleep overs, especially a safe place for nefarious actors to reside while perhaps indulging in libations that do not coincide with safe driving home later. Of course, all basement activities were closely supervised by Chester the cat. Marilyn’s basement was also the place I discovered can goods for just in case situations. I had never seen 1-gallon cans of kidney beans before! Like restaurant-sized. I always thought Marilyn was sophisticatedly hip with sweet rides like Jaguar sedans and 2-seater sports cars with FOXZ1 license plates! Those were wonderful memories of a woman who ran a tight ship and took care of her family! I remember her lovely smile and her wit and charm too. She had a wonderful laugh and chuckle. As I get older, I really wish I had her keen hearing! So envious. After losing my own Mother just a few months ago, it certainly hit me with what a loss this must be for everyone. I so feel for you Ron with the loss of your partner in crime! And the loss her children and grandchildren may experience. I hope you all find your own personal path through grief, whatever that may or may not look like. I am so grateful to have known her, even only for a short time, and that she had a wonderful peaceful death with all her body guards surrounding her. As I write this full of tears and so many emotions, Bless you Marilyn Houseman! Rest in Peace. My regards to Karen and Dirk, Laurel and family, and of course to Ron.

Dirk and Karen, We are so sorry for your loss. I would have loved to have met Marilyn - she sounds like such an interesting woman and had so many interests and hobbies! It is obvious she treasured her family and friends; she seemed to have a true appreciation and love for life - living it to the fullest. A beautiful and poignant tribute to a wonderful woman, wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend. I recall one of Marilyn’s favorite birds, the wren. She helped me discover a new side of nature in her love of her gardens and the birds who visited in each season. I am so thankful to Ron and Marilyn in sharing some of their excesses from their beautiful and bountiful gardens for mine. For this I will always be grateful as it will serve of a reminder of the truly gracious woman she was.
