Atty. Steven L. Maynard

April 2, 2022
MAYNARD, STEVEN L.

Steven L. Maynard, a longtime resident of the greater Nashua area, age 74, died peacefully on Saturday, April 2, 2022 after a brief illness, with his beloved wife, daughter and family holding his hands.

Steve was born and raised in Nashua, NH, as the eldest of ten children of Lucien and Ellen Maynard. He was a proud graduate of the University of New Hampshire in 1970 and an even prouder graduate of the University of Colorado-Boulder Law School in 1974.

Having lived in Amherst for over 20 years, he had recently relocated to Portsmouth, NH. He was a respected member of the New Hampshire bar and a well-liked and esteemed lawyer based in Nashua for many years.

Steve was much too modest to have wanted others to read of his many achievements, adventures and escapades. He was a good and decent man with a sharp intellect, a playful sense of humor, a spirited love of sports, a fondness for very strong coffee, and a lot of soul.  He leaves many friends, former colleagues and family members to grieve his death but also to feel privileged and grateful for having known and loved him.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Kathleen Casey Maynard of Portsmouth, NH; his daughter and son-in-law, Callan and Tim Sullivan of Lee, NH and his granddaughter Zoe. Steve is also survived by siblings Jim Maynard (and Sharon Elliot) of Nashua, NH, David and Patricia Maynard of Hollis, NH, Mary and Russell Arrowsmith of Amherst, NH, Sue and Jim Babineau of Lisbon Falls, ME, Kevin Maynard and Cindy Mugnier of Belchertown, MA, Beth and Fred Lamb of Nashua, NH; niece Danielle Casey and Sam Alsop, and also many many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Steve was predeceased by his parents; his son Jonathan; and his brothers, Peter, Mark and Christopher.

Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Sunday afternoon, April 10th from 4 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Road in Bedford, NH, Monday morning, April 11th at 11 o’clock. Friends are invited to attend. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.farwellfuneralservice.com  Arrangements are in the care of the Farwell Funeral Service in Nashua.

Steve was a excellent lawyer, he repressed me and got what I wanted. I had my mom and stepdad get him as a lawyer, I got him a bunch of cases. Steve I know you can see what I'm saying here. I'll see you on the other side.

As a Public Defender in Nashua I often encountered Steve in the Court waiting for our cases to be called. He always impressed me as a kind and decent man. I also met him on occasion at the Amherst Town dump where we had friendly conversations together. I will miss him.

I just learned of Steve's death in Bar News and I'm so sad. Steve was a good lawyer and a really good man. He was funny and he was kind and nice. My heartfelt sympathy to Kathy whom I also haven't seen in a very long time. Kathy and Steve seemed like such a good match and I was so happy when they decided the same thing about each other. I'm sending the biggest hug to Kathy.

I first met Steve in the mid-80s when I was a new caseworker at DCYF and he was a contract attorney representing us in juvenile court. His calm demeanor gave me the confidence I needed during tense hearings. At some point, I became friends with him and Casey and always enjoyed spending time with them. I loved talking to Steve about books and current events, as well as sharing donuts (!!). I was thrilled when they graciously offered to host our wedding at their house; Steve conducted the ceremony and Callan spoke as well. "Best day ever!" he declared as he hugged us goodbye. Steve was a good person - he always had sage advice, a great sense of humor, and a smile that lit up the room. I feel honored to have been friends and am heartbroken at his passing. Condolences to Casey, Callan, and the family.

I’ve known Steve since my Aunt Kathy introduced us when I was around 6 years old. I’d like to think it was my approval of him she needed for things to work out! A trip to Canobie Lake Park sealed the deal for him when he charmingly joined me on all the rides she wouldn’t. After that, I had the pleasure of being brought along on all the family summer vacations; laughing our way through Ireland, Canada, California, Nantucket, NYC, and France. I even lived with Steve and Kathy for a year where we grew even closer, sharing a love for music, photography, good stories, and great donuts. Navigating a somewhat turbulent time in my adolescence, I’ll never forget just how kind, patient, and understanding he always was. He had a subtle way of assuring me that he was rooting for me, and that he was proud of me. Steve, I miss you so much already. I promise to take care of your girls. I love you … and thank you.

One of my favorite times with Steve was when we all went to Miami Beach Marina and he got to meet Pedro Martinez. His look going from curiosity as he looked to see who it was we were walking towards, to astonishment as he realized it was his favorite baseball player, and which then, after getting to meet him and shake his hand, turned into just a constant smile for the rest of the day. Every time you’d look at him, he’d be there with just this big smile on his face, happy as a clam. It’s pretty much always the image that would pop into my head whenever I’d think of him.

I have known Steve since our Little League days. My sister and I lost our Father before their wedding. I for a short moment filled my Father’s shoes, when I walked Kathy down the aisle where Steve stood at the altar. Steve has filled those shoes from that day forward. Steve was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, For all of us who knew Steve, he will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace Steve.

Sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Graduated from Nashua High School with Steve and renewed our acquaintance after his return to NH from Colorado. We had many good times and memories made during our interactions in and out of the "courtroom". I had the privilege of knowing both Steve and Kathy C. during our early careers and have always considered them dear memorable friends through the years. Steve was a special person, as everyone has said, who got along with everyone. May he rest in peace and condolences to Casey and family.

This is a real loss for the legal communities in Nashua and New Hampshire. Steve was also a kind man who was willing to mentor young Nashua lawyers, myself included. His legacy not only includes his important contributions to his clients and to the interests of justice, but also includes the life and career of his daughter, Callan, who followed in his footsteps and has made important contributions of her own as a Public Defender and in private practice.

I worked for Steve from January 1997 until we closed the office in the Indian Head Plaza in January 2015. Steve may have been my boss but he was also my friend. He was one of the kindest people I had ever met. He was a champion of the underdog and would take on cases even if people could not pay. Steve loved his family and was always so proud of Callan and all her accomplishments. I will miss you, my friend. My deepest sympathy to Casey, Callan, and his family.

Paul Delude said : Guest Report Apr 05, 2022 at 2:36 PM

I met Muskie back in the days we both worked at Howdy Beefburger. We became close friends and shared many memorable fun times together some of which will stay in the vault. Adult responsibilities took both of us us on our separate journey but those memories we created back then are still with me. Condolences to your family. I will think of you often.

Steve was a great guy. We will cherish the memories of 20 or more ski trips to Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Banff, Montreal, Quebec ,France, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. A softball stalwart for 20 years. A loyal friend. A guy you would want in your foxhole. He was one of the Good Guys. Rest well my friend.

Steve was a part of some of the most important cases in my career as a prosecutor. And in each I recall looking over at him and seeing that same grin come across his face. I knew my case was facing certain doom. So infuriating! Now I look back and realize how great it was to try cases against him. In all our dealings through the years, his graciousness shown through. A truly wonderful guy. Rest In Peace Steve. You deserve it. Sending thoughts and prayers to his family.

RIP Steve my fellow Howdy's worker. Dealing with customers probably helped a little in your legal career. I have fond memories of our working together. You may have been short in stature but I remember playing football against you and trying to tackle you was like trying to bring down a small bull. Condolences to your family and friends. You will be missed.

Patricia LaFrance said : Guest Report Apr 05, 2022 at 12:35 PM

Rest In Peace Steve. Even though we were on opposites sides as defense attorney and prosecutor, you were always gracious and kind, with a great sense of humor. I learned a valuable lesson from you - always pour a cup of water out over the floor when you're in trial in Nashua - never over the table! We also had fun playing softball for the Nashua Bar back in the day.

Tom Tessier said : Guest Report Apr 05, 2022 at 10:32 AM

Steve. I hope you finally forgave me. We were about 5’ 2” and the shortest guys in the NHS graduating class of ‘65. You were shocked when I returned home from Nam having grown 9 inches. We met again when you Joined my good friend Cliff K to form Kinghorn and Maynard Law. Many years later you occupied my office at Indian Head plaza. It is truly a small world. I hope you Rest In Peace up there where you earned a very special place.

Andrea Amodeo-Vickery said : Guest Report Apr 05, 2022 at 10:21 AM

I knew Steve for the entire career he had in Nashua, and we always got along well because we were always on the same side ., i.e., criminal defense attorneys . We shared many fun times at the early years of the Nashua Bar meetings where he and Bill Groff would outdo each other with 'short' jokes about each other ! The Nashua Bar picnics at Alpine Grove were memorable affairs as well, and let's just say that it was a great idea when the association decided to provide limo service to any and all members and guests who ' needed' a ride home. I was so happy when he married Kathy Casey, a person I had gotten to know separately in her excellent work at NDC. After he retired I would run into him and Kathy at political events in Amherst and that was a great time to catch up. I will miss him and my sincere condolences to his entire family.

Rest in Peace, Steve. I was shocked to read of your passing, as we were both members of the Nashua High class of 65 and in our adult years, did many a battle at the Nashua District Court. I admired your soft spoken way that we did our jobs and win or lose, we always remained on a friendly basis. So sorry to hear you leaving us so soon and my condolences to your wife and family. May God bless and keep you.

He was definitely a much better student than I was, but we shared several classes together. Everyone knew Steve and never knew anyone who didn’t like him. Steve will be missed. I’m glad to have had him pass through the pages that are my life.
