John P. “Skip” Ryan, Jr.

Ryan Jr., John Patrick

John Patrick “Skip” Ryan, Jr., 70, of Nashua, passed away Tuesday afternoon, December 4, 2018 at Care One of Lexington, MA, after a period of declining health with his loving family by side.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on February 22, 1948, he was a son of the late John Patrick and Sue (Page) Ryan.  Members of his family include his wife of 49 years, Cheryl A. (Welch) Ryan of Nashua, whom he married on July 12, 1969 at St. Catherine’s Church in Somerville, MA; his son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Kerrie A. Ryan of Hull, MA; his daughter, Kelly A. Ryan of Nashua; his grandchildren, Caitlin, Fallon, twins Avery and Faith, and  Rory; and predeceased by a granddaughter, Emma in October 2016; his siblings, Suzanne Marks of Somerville, MA, Linda Taylor of Billerica, MA, Angel Ryan of Somerville, MA  Richard Ryan of Hudson, MA, Patricia Jacome of Revere, MA and Sharon Ryan of Barrington, NH; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.

On March 30, 1966, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was a 19 year- old Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division.  He served with the Leathernecks on a little piece of hell called ConThien (“Hill of Angels”) Quang Tri Province, RVN. Mr. Ryan was seriously wounded defending his fellow Marines and awarded the Purple Heart.

John would struggle with these injuries for the rest of his days and succumb to them over 50 years later.  Despite these limitations, like any Marine, he persevered. He married the love of his life and raised a wonderful family that he was very proud of.  He was funny, kind, tough, opinionated, loyal and someone you could really talk to about anything.  John treasured spending time with his grandchildren, playing catch and sharing hugs.  He enjoyed reading and considered himself a self-taught expert of American history and the history of the Marine Corps.

He loved everything about Boston, especially the history and sports teams.  A passionate Boston Sports enthusiast, he was quick too remind everyone that Boston didn’t always win championships every year.  His only regret with the Red Sox was that his father wasn’t alive to see them finally win the World Series.  He also, loved high school sports and continued to follow them long after his children graduated.  A devoted fan to any team his children or grandchildren played on, John supported them any way he could.  Even when he couldn’t make it because of his condition, it seemed like he was always there.

John was a member of several veteran’s organizations including the Old Veterans of Foreign Wars Pointer Post of Somerville, MA and the Disabled American Veterans. He fought for change in the Veterans Administration and believed it was heading in the right direction.  He always had a kind and generous heart and was faithful to his family, his Corps, and his Lord.  His presence will be missed.  May he forever rest in peace.  SEMPER FIDELIS.

A graveside service with full Marine Corps honors will take place at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Route 3 in Boscawen, Wednesday, December 12th at 11:30 a.m.  Family and friends are invited to attend.   Those wishing to be part of the funeral procession are asked to gather at the Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock St., Nashua at 9:30 a.m.  Donations may be made in his memory to The Emma Ryan Memorial Fund, c/o Jinnie Walsh, Hingham Savings Bank, 401 Nantasket Avenue, Hull, MA 02045.  Arrangements are in the care of the FARWELL FUNERAL SERVICE, 18 Lock Street, Nashua. Margaret J. “Peggy” L’Ecuyer

L'ECUYER, PEGGY Final

Margaret J. “Peggy” L’Ecuyer, 77,  a long time Nashua resident and widow of Jack L’Ecuyer, passed away Friday afternoon, November 23, 2018 after a period of declining health.

Peggy was born in Hanover, NH on January 8, 1941, a daughter of the late Leslie and Virginia (Kingsley) Churchill. She was a graduate of Hartford High School with the Class of 1959 in her hometown of White River Junction, VT. Shortly after her graduation and marriage, Peggy and Jack moved to Dover, NH where his job took him. The L’Ecuyer’s loved living near the seacoast until 1963 when they moved to Nashua and have made their home here for more than 50 years. In January 1967, Peggy began a 25-year career in banking with the former Nashua Trust Company until the bank closed in the early 1990s.

She later worked for a small travel agency, specializing in Air and Cruise travel. Peggy enjoyed what she called a “happy job”. While working there, she and Jack were able to cruise to Bermuda for their 35th wedding anniversary. After the travel agency closed, Peggy decided to finally retire and give her all to writing poetry.

Known for her smile and outgoing personality, Peggy was a versatile poet, who has written hundreds of poems. In April of 2013 her book, “Emotions In Motion” was published. Her dream come true. She felt that there was something for everyone to read in her book. Again, in her words, “One is never too old to do, whatever”. She feels each poem even the small ones, tells a story. After all, the poems are micro mini stories she feels.

Peggy was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Nashua, where her husband Jack was the organist and choir director for almost 40 years. She sang in the choir for over 25 years and served on many committees. Peggy was the recipient of the prestigious “Woman of the Year Award” in 2004. Mrs. L’Ecuyer also attended the Pilgrim Congregational Church for many years. In the mid-1960s, Peggy was a member of the Nashua Symphony Choral Society in its formative years. Music and singing were always one of the joys of life. She also held membership in the Business and Professional Women’s Club in the early 1970s.

Peggy loved being with her family whenever possible. One of her favorites was FOOD. Her dad used to say, “Most people eat to live, you LIVE to eat! Someone once said “you are what you eat” and she said, “I must be a goody” A life member of Weight Watchers, Peggy loved Devil Dogs and was rather upset when the company went under. Peggy enjoyed dabbling with oil paintings and appreciated the Arts in general. Tennis was a favorite sport of which she so enjoyed watching. At a younger age, she was known to hit a few balls and run around the court. She had a love of horses and rode Horseback whenever she could, again in her younger years.

Mrs. L’Ecuyer was a member of Inspire, a support group for those with lung disease. She also was a member of the Senior Activity Center where she enjoyed working out in their gym when she was able. Peggy also volunteered on presidential campaigns and felt strongly that the citizens of the USA should vote as it is a privilege to be able to vote and it is our duty as citizens to vote. She also donated blood to the Red Cross. She had a rare blood type and hoped that by giving she could someday save a life. She was sad when in later life she could no longer give blood because of her COPD lung disease.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was predeceased by her husband Jack who died in May 2007; her sister Janet Sberro who died in June 2013; and a very close and special friend, Dave Reed.

Members of her family include her three sons, Leslie “Lee” L’Ecuyer and” his wife Carolyn, Jeffery L’Ecuyer and his wife Colleen, and Mark L’Ecuyer; six grandchildren, Joshua L’Ecuyer, Jennifer Mahajan and her husband Raja, Laurie, Sara,  Angela and Nicholas L’Ecuyer; a great-grandson, Ethan Mahajan and a great-granddaughter, Kaiya; a nephew Justin Nordstrom; a niece Jennifer Zuares; also many cousins and friends.

Susan E. Bell

Bell, Susan E.

On November 3, 2018, Susan Elizabeth (Matthews) Bell, departed this earth for Heaven with her children by her side.

She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on April 25, 1950, daughter of C. Frederick Matthews and the late Frances (Hood) Matthews. Her family moved to the United States in her childhood, first to Virginia and then Massachusetts where she graduated from Lexington High School. Susan resided in Litchfield, New Hampshire for the last forty years.

Susan was delighted to raise her family, choosing to leave her career, and loved her children fiercely. She loved cooking, making her famous cheesecake and baked goods for loved ones, butterflies, angels, daisies and dandelions, warm sunshine, and Coke Zero; but more than all these things, she loved people. In her quiet, nurturing nature, she was protective and kind, and quick to offer love, support and laughter to her family, friends and strangers. Her contagious, signature laughter will be echoed in the memories of those who love her forever. Sue’s heart for people was beautiful, always recognizing the importance of caring for others and serving as an encourager. No matter what she had going on or what she was going without, she selflessly poured love into the people around her. She would be embarrassed that these things were being written of her, as she never liked being the center of attention- but she deserves many more compliments than this space will allow.

In addition to her mother, Sue was predeceased by her brother, John Matthews. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished by: her hero, best friend and father, C. Frederick Matthews; her beloved children, Brian Bell and Laurie Bernard and her husband Jonathan; her adored grandchildren, Matilyn, Kaitlyn and Joseph Bernard; her twin brother, William Matthews and his wife Deborah Matthews who she loved as her sister; her sister, Marilyn Matthews; three nephews, two nieces, extended family and countless friends she made along the way.

A private remembrance will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please instead find joy in the little things, and share that joy with others. Susan would be most pleased if you people love well, share kindness, see the best in others, and help where you can. We would be honored if she inspired you to be intentional with kindness.

Emile A. Chagnon, Jr.

CHAGNON, EMILE A. JR.

Emile A. Chagnon, Jr. 90

Born on the 4th of July in 1928, Emile Chagnon Jr. was a patriotic American, an involved citizen and an eternal optimist.
Despite a childhood in the Great Depression, Emile found fun and adventure scouting with his friends in the then wilderness of south Nashua. As a teenager he unloaded freight cars at his father’s lumber yard after school and looked forward to Friday nights at the Commodore Ballroom in Lowell, dancing to Glenn Miller and the other big bands of the era. After graduating from UNH in 1951 with a degree in Business he married the girl of his dreams, a lovely Rivier College student named Doe Auger. He would always refer to their wedding day as the happiest of his life.

The newlyweds were soon off to London, where Chagnon served as a lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean War. Forfeiting his own dream of traveling the world as an Air Force officer, he returned home at his father’s request to run the lumber company. Eventually, his two sons, Brit and Charlie, his daughter Michelle and wife Doe would join the family business and would expand it to include truss manufacturing and custom kitchen design. By the 1970s, “Chag” was also involved in developing land throughout southern New Hampshire and the lakes region. In 1983, when Chagnon Lumber was destroyed by one of the largest fires in Nashua’s history, he rose from the ashes with an extraordinary amount of work and determination. He was named New Hampshire Lumberman of the Year in 1985.

Chag was active in the Nashua community from a young age. At 30 he co-founded Richelieu, a French-speaking club that supports Nashua charities. He was a member of Nashua Rotary for 58 years, taking pride in the club’s philanthropy and serving as its president in 1987. In the 70’s he spent a decade as president of what is now the Greater Nashua Mental Health Center, supporting families in need and assisting them with housing.

Chag was a savvy bridge and chess player and had a life-long passion for travel, visiting over thirty countries with family and friends. He and Doe found joy in their five children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Many have spent extensive time in France thanks to the lasting friendship Chag formed as an exchange student with a wonderful Bordeaux family in 1950. For this, and for the kind of life that Dad provided for us with hard work and sacrifice, we his children will be forever grateful. As our beloved brother Charlie once wrote in a poetic tribute,
“Your blood, sweat and tears gave us country club years
Carefree days at the pool were so great.
But Dad, you weren’t there, you worked more than your share
And stayed up with the blueprints so late.

We’ll treasure forever our time spent together
We couldn’t have asked for much more,
You always shine true, you’re the red, white and blue
Thanks, Dad, for the ‘good life’ galore.”

Mildred W. Hobbs

Hobbs, MW

Mildred W. Hobbs of Tamworth, New Hampshire passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, with her family by her side at Saint Joseph Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire on Wednesday, October 24. She was 90 years old.

Born on January 14, 1928, daughter of the late Charles and Lilla (Pennell) Williams, she lived in Tamworth all of her life. She was one of eight children.
Mildred, known as “Millie”, was a highly intelligent, self-educated woman who was an avid reader with a particular interest in American history and politics. She continually kept up with current political news and was a proud member of the Democratic Party for her entire life.

In earlier years, Millie enjoyed traveling with her family. She visited Canada and New York with her daughter and son-in-law, and traveled to Hawaii and England with her son.
Due to her love of reading, she amassed a huge vocabulary which aided her immensely when completing difficult crossword and Jumble puzzles, a favorite pastime of hers.
Throughout her life, Millie worked for many different businesses. She was employed by the Reporter Press, a newspaper in North Conway for several years. She also worked at the Deer Cove Lodge Resort on Ossipee Lake, initially as a housekeeper, and later becoming the resort’s head housekeeper. She was a short order cook for various eating establishments in the Ossipee area including the Sunny Villa Restaurant and also an Avon Representative for many years. In the 1960’s, Millie and her two sisters owned their own restaurant for a period of time where everything was home cooked including bakery items such as pies, cakes, and muffins that were all made fresh daily.

Millie’s greatest pleasure in life was spending time with family and friends. Up until a few months before her passing, she felt fortunate to be able to live on her own at her home in Tamworth with the wonderful support she received from her very generous neighbors, Helen and Philip Ames, Richard and Lyse Marshall, Sandra and Scott Eldridge, Bobby Emerson, and Dennis Johnson. She also received help from her nephew, Michael Brownell, who took great care of her lawn.

More recently, Millie was staying in Nashua with her daughter and son-in law where she could receive extra support due to a decline in her health. Over the past few months, she enjoyed spending time and participating in activities with her family members, who all live in Nashua. She especially loved being close to her grandchildren and great-granddaughters and was lovingly known as “Nanny”, a name that was given to her by her granddaughter, Jill, when she was very young.

Millie is predeceased by her husband, Philip, who passed away in December 2013, her grandson, Brad Richard Stansfield who passed away in March 1982, and five of her siblings. Surviving family members include a daughter, Patricia (Hobbs) Stansfield and her husband, John Stansfield, a son, Brian Hobbs and his partner Robert Monteleone, a grandson, Adam James Stansfield, a granddaughter, Jill Amy Stansfield and her fiancé Todd Patti, and two great granddaughters, Amy and Emily Stansfield-Patti. She is also survived by two of her siblings, a sister, Frances Brownell and her husband Laurence of Center Ossipee, a brother, Paul Williams and his wife, Martha of Tamworth, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3300 E. Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718 or online at http://mda.org/ in memory of Millie and her late grandson Brad Richard Stansfield.
