Deborah E. West

West, Deborah E 20170718_12181516

Deborah E. (Howe) West, of Loomis, CA and formerly of Nashua, passed away at her home in Loomis, CA on June 20, 2017, with family by her side. She was born in Nashua on December 20, 1956, the daughter of Cynthia M. Howe and the late Alan F. Howe.
Deb was a graduate of Nashua High School, Class of 1974 and resided in Nashua until her marriage to Gordon L. West in 1979, at which time they moved to California. Deb attended Sierra College in Rocklin, CA and received double Associate Degrees of Art in Accounting and Computer Studies and held various administrative positions in these fields. She was the Registrar for the Horizon Charter School District.
The love of her family was Deb’s first priority and they were always number one. She worked and was active in the local schools which enabled her to be at home with her children when they were young. Deb’s faith was very strong and she, and her family attended the First United Methodist Church of Loomis. She was always active in Church services, groups, and whenever and wherever she could help out in any way. At one time, Deb took art lessons from Bob Ross and produced some lovely paintings, though she always denied any talent. Stamping was another hobby which eventually led to Deb teaching classes from her home which she always said was more fun than really “teaching” card making. A love of books started early in her life and she never had quite enough “time” to read as often as possible so joining her Book Club was an added joy to her. Deb’s Bunko group opened up a whole new fun phase and she always enjoyed preparing for the “theme” of each monthly get together, let alone playing the game. Though Deb and her husband were surrounded by California sports teams, Debbie never gave up her love for the Patriots and cheered them on no matter who they were playing, even all the California teams, wearing her team jerseys and hoodies proudly. Perhaps because of her spirit, no one hushed her! Deb also loved the oceans and would visit them (east and west) as often as possible. She loved whale-watching trips and especially sighting the Orcas. Deb and Gordon enjoyed a dream trip to Hawaii and had hoped to return some day.
Memories of Debbie will be held forever in the hearts of her husband, Gordon L. West of Loomis, CA; her daughter and son-in-law, Courtney (West) and Frank Murrietta of Roseville, CA; her son, Staff Sgt. Kellen G. West of El Paso, TX; her mother, Cynthia M. Howe of Nashua, NH; her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Alan K. and Stephanie B. (Stahl) Howe of Colchester, VT; her nephew and niece, Carter A. Howe and Emily D. Howe; her mother-in-law, Virginia West; her sisters-in-law, Laurie West and Gini West; her niece, Melonie (Mike) and family. Deb is also survived by several cousins and many, many friends. She predeceased by her father, Alan F. Howe and her father-in-law, Gordon L. West, Sr.
A Memorial and Celebration of Life Service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Loomis on July 8, 2017 with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall where family, friends and guests gathered to share wonderful, past moments with, and memories of Debbie. In lieu of flowers, the Family invites those who wish to donate, to consider either the Susan B. Komen Foundation, New England Affiliate, 2000 Commonwealth Avenue Suite 205, Newton, MA 02466 or The American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

Ronald A. LeBlanc

LEBLANC, RONALD

Ronald Arthur (“Ronnie”) LeBlanc passed away peacefully at 11:40 a.m. on June 5, 2017 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME, at age 95. He was born on February 28, 1922 in Campbellton, NB, the first of four children born to Philippe and Yvonne (Bujold) LeBlanc. In August 1923, when he was just eighteen months old, Ronnie left Canada with his parents, who settled in Nashua, NH. He attended St. Louis de Gonzague School, Crowley Elementary School, Nashua Junior High, and Nashua High School, where he played violin in the school orchestra, ran cross-country, and played on the tennis team.

Upon graduation from NHS in 1940, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), serving for six months in the road-building project on Mount Battie just outside Camden, ME. Before enlisting in the U.S. Marines in July 1942, he worked briefly at the Jackson Mills on Canal Street in Nashua and shortly thereafter at the Nashua Corporation on Franklin Street (at that time it was called Nashua Gummed and Coated Paper). Called up for active duty in July 1942, Ronnie underwent basic training at Paris Island, SC, and then attended AMF training School in Jacksonville, FL, before being deployed to the Pacific Theater early in 1944. There he served as an aircraft mechanic assigned to a fighter squadron that flew F-4U Corsairs on bombing runs launched from Makin (now Butaritari) Island, the Eniwetok Atoll, and then Kwajalain Island.

Ronnie returned stateside in May 1945 and married Jeannette Chomard (1922-2000), whom he had met while ice skating in Nashua back in January 1942, just seven months before he was called up for active duty. The newlyweds travelled cross-country by train to El Centro, CA, where he served out the final few months of his military enlistment at the Marine base there. He was honorably discharged from the Marines as a Staff Sergeant on December 14, 1945. Ronnie went back to his old job at the Nashua Corporation in January 1946 and worked there for over forty years, right up until his retirement in 1987. He worked in the Gummers Department, initially as a helper, then as a machine operator, and finally, in 1949, as a foreman. At that time, he was the youngest – and the highest paid – foreman at Nashua Corporation, supervising 33 people in this department. Subsequently, he became the foreman of the Breakers Department and the Combiners Department as well. To prepare for these jobs, he attended Lowell Tech for two years of night school and later, as a member of the Industrial Management Club of NH, he attended Industrial Management Seminars each year at UNH.

In addition to taking annual summer vacations with his family (to such places as Hampton Beach, the White Mountains, Cape Cod, Lake George, New York City, and Washington, DC) and periodic trips to visit Canadian relatives (mainly to Montreal, QC, Carleton, QC, and Campbellton, NB), Ronnie enjoyed playing golf, a sport that he discovered only in the late 1960s, when he was already in his forties. He played mainly at the Amherst Golf Course, Green Meadows (Hudson, NH), and the Whip ‘or Will Golf Course (in the Card Shop League). After his retirement, he also played golf regularly at courses in Port Charlotte, FL, and Myrtle Beach, SC. He made two holes-in-one, both of them at the Amherst Golf course (on the same hole).

During their 55-year marriage, Ronnie and Jeannette enjoyed socializing as a couple by going out dancing (especially at the VFW Hall on Quincy Street in Nashua on Saturday nights) and going out to play cards at the homes of friends and relatives. They became “snow birds” after Ronnie retired, travelling with a group of other Nashua couples each winter to the warmer climate down south. Following Jeannette’s death in 2000 (following two strokes), Ronnie lived by himself for several years in Nashua, but moved in 2006 to Falmouth, ME, buying an apartment at Ocean View, a retirement community located there. He made some close friends and acquaintances at his new residence. He even managed to take a few vacation trips (two of them to distant Seattle) and, for a while, he continued to play some golf. But the broken hip that he suffered from a fall in February 2013 and the increasing pain of arthritis slowed him down quite a bit during his final few years. He still managed to get around fairly well with a cane or a walker, however, participating in many of the activities at Ocean View and going out for lunch each weekend with one of his three adult children. And he very much enjoyed watching old films on television and rooting for his favorite Boston sports teams – especially his beloved Red Sox – from the comfort of his easy chair. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him for his sense of humor, his cheerful disposition, and his easy-going personality.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jeannette, his mother Yvonne, his father Philippe, and his three siblings and their spouses: Irene and Victor Zibolis, Jeannine and Robert Beaudin, and John and Rita (Beauregard) LeBlanc.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Richard and Doris (Lavoie) LeBlanc of Scarborough, ME, Ronald and Lynda (Galard) LeBlanc of Edmonds, WA, and Michele and Gary Gagne of Cape Elizabeth, ME; by his seven grandchildren and their spouses: Brenda and Thomas Van Dzura of Essex Junction, VT, Justin LeBlanc and his ex-wife, Hope Freeman LeBlanc, both of South Portland, ME, Renée and Gibson Fay-LeBlanc of Portland, ME, Anne and Aaron Davis of Falmouth, ME, Martin and Amanda (Wright) LeBlanc of Seattle, WA, Nicole Gagne of South Portland, ME, and Christopher Gagne and his fiancée, Jenie Song, both of Arlington, MA; and by his eleven great-grandchildren: Kyle, Darren, and Joseph Van Dzura of Essex Junction, Andrew and Theo LeBlanc of South Portland, Liam and Emmett Fay-LeBlanc of Portland, Owen, Vivian, and Edwin Davis of Falmouth, and Amélie LeBlanc of Seattle.

In lieu of flowers, Ronnie requested that donations be made either to the Special Olympics of Maine, 125 John Roberts Road, South Portland, ME 04106 or to the Special Olympics of New Hampshire, 650 Elm Street, #200, Manchester, NH 03101.

Mary L. Sargent

Sargent, Mary (obit & cards)

Mary L. (Nolan) Sargent, 92, a lifelong Nashua, NH native, formerly of Milford St. Nashua, died peacefully, amongst her family Thursday,  May 11, 2017, at Fairview Nursing Home, Hudson, NH following several years of declining health.

She married George W. Sargent, September 1947, and were married for 62 years at the time of his passing in December 2009. Mary was born in Nashua on March 14, 1925 to John and Florida (Bernier) Nolan. She graduated from Nashua High School, Class of 1944.

After graduation, Mary began a career at Nashua Corporation as a typist. Mom was quite the lady, she believed in herself. She applied for a typist position despite the fact that she wasn’t really a typist! She taught herself while on the job!  In her later years, she worked for the Nashua Police Department as a Crossing Guard. Her post, for many years, was at Jean’s Foodland. At the same time, she had a second job, at Nashua High School, in Food Services. She was in charge of the Salad Bar. Mary was referred to as “The Salad Bar Lady”.

Mary, from her very early years, always loved to dance! She took tap dance lessons for many years. Her passion was enjoyed into her late seventies when she danced with the Seniors in their annual Dance Reviews. Mary’s hobbies were knitting her daughter’s sweaters, scarves, hats and mittens. She loved to cook for her family. Mary was taught by the best. Her father, John Nolan, was a cook during WWI in France, and her uncle, Levi Lord, who owned Lord’s Inn at many locations in Nashua taught her many great cooking secrets.

Our mother enjoyed her travel years. She traveled to the Elks conventions and Navy reunions nationwide with her husband, George. Mary enjoyed many years in Florida as a “snow bird.” Her most favorite trip was to Europe, where she toured Italy with her sister-in-law, Alice Nolan. She spoke of that trip often.

Mary had the most beautiful personality. She would easily start a conversation with strangers. Ward 1 voters enjoyed having her as a moderator at Charlotte Ave. School. Mary was a very proud woman.  She was dressed and ready to go whenever the opportunity presented itself. The true passion of Mary’s life was her family. As her daughters became adults and parents, they saw with new eyes what she gave them, a precious and priceless gift as a loving, self-sacrificing mother.

Mom experienced a stroke many years ago and she personified “The Greatest Generation,” with courage and determination as she addressed life’s difficulties. Mary will truly live forever in the hearts and minds of those she has left behind. She never lost her grace, her charm or her smile! Mary touched the hearts of everyone who knew her and she left her sweet legacy with many.

Mary was pre-deceased by her parents, John and Florida Nolan, her husband, George, her brother and very best friend, John Nolan, Jr., her brother-in-law, John “Jack” Sargent, and two infant grandchildren, Amy Richard and Kraig Ball. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Plourde and her husband Ron, Susan Richard and her husband, John, Brenda Ball and her husband Vinnie, all of Nashua; seven grandchildren, Ryan Plourde and his wife Tara, Scott Plourde and his wife, Stacie, Jeff Richard and his wife, Sheri, Keith Richard and his wife, Amy, Kyle Ball and his girlfriend Sarah, Melissa (Ball) Woelflein and her husband John and Erik Ball. Nine great grandchildren, Grant and Brendan Plourde, Mackenzie, Cassidie and Camden Plourde, Colton Richard, Emily and Carter Richard, and Sarah Woelflein. Sister-In-Law, Alice Nolan, of Nashua, Sister-In-Law, Theresa Sargent of Chelmsford, MA., several nieces and nephews.

Mary’s family would like to express a very special thank you to her Extended Family, at Fairview Nursing Home in Hudson, NH. The staff took very good care of her and her entire family. They were the light and laughter in her life over the past 9 years. Each and everyone who are near and dear to our hearts, we thank you for the support you have given to us and the love you shared.

Mary and her family were blessed with the love and care of special people called Home Health and Hospice. They helped us all maneuver the many hills and valleys of the dying process with love and compassion. We thank you for your commitment to honor the dying with respect and love.
