During Hurricane Katrina, one of the DoD Captains helping the LA National Guard Air Boss, told me it was a beehive over New Orleans and southern LA. Numerous entities were flying helicopters all over the place. FEMA did not have any Air Ops expertise then so I talked to Don who was then in CAP and told him of our issue. Don took the bull by the horns and made the FEMA Air Ops mission possible. I know Don is flying high now watching all over us.

I am so sorry, I just heard of Don's passing. He was a great person! I enjoyed your family so much. I would bump into Don from time to time and he always had a hug for me and a smile. He was wonderful to my Dad when he was here and took him for a ride in the P51 and did a death roll, my dad cried after that, he never thought he would be in a P51. Don made a wonderful memory for my dad. He will be greatly missed by so many people. Don you were a great man and I appreciated that you were in my life.

My condolences to the family on Don's passing. I have memories of many events with Don, but especially that flight in his twin-engine plane over eastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine on the day after the Blizzard of 1978 so I could shoot photos of the storm's effects for The Telegraph.

What a great guy Don was. This picture perfectly captures his outlook on life. Bright. Smiling. Ready! Don was always a true gentleman. A kind man who would tell it the way it was without being mean or rude. He is and was a model for others to follow. I know his family will miss him every single day....and even though I don't know every one of them, I know his son-in-law, Chris, who's own son followed in Don's footsteps as a Pilot. How proud he must have been to see that. To have seen EVERYTHING his kids and grandkids did in life! I am happy I got to know him; chat whenever I would see him, be in his company at Norton's for lunch as a "regular" and know him. A good man. So many wonderful memories of a life well-lived for his family to remember forever. My heart-felt sympathy goes out to each and every one of them.

Don will be well remembered as a highly active member, leader and mentor both within Civil Air Patrol and state and national air operations and emergency services. He was my mentor when I assumed NH Wing Director of Operations from him when he was appointed NH Wing Commander of CAP. Great pilot, personal flight instructor, and friend. Don, you will be missed. High Flight by Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr. Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air . . . Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark nor even eagle flew – And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Don was an amazing man. Always full of laughter and never without a smile on his face. On behalf of the Wright Brothers (who Don always joked he flew with) and the FEMA Air Operations Program, we are sorry for your loss. We know Don is in a better place flying above the clouds where he loves to be. Don, you were an amazing man, an excellent colleague and always fun to be around. Don't worry, MB carries your CAP torch. You'll be missed, but never forgotten.

Although our acquaintance was brief hereatTheVillages, Don was a true American patriot so it is amazingly fitting that he would leave us over the Memorial Day weekend. May he Rest In Peace and forever “be in the clouds.” Our sympathies to Chip and the entire family.

Don opened the door of classic cars and car shows to me, something he loved. Thanks to his introduction (and Chip's stories) I quickly closed that door. We already miss you Don, along with your stories, your stubbornness and your friendship.
