Donald M. Mayo, 70, a well-known Nashua native and insurance agent, passed away unexpectedly, Friday afternoon, January 6, 2017.
Born in Nashua on October 26, 1946, he was a son of the late Marvin F. and Juliette A. (Therriault) Mayo. Donald attended the former St. Francis Xavier School and was a graduate of Nashua High School Class of 1964. In the summer of ’64 he joined the Navy and furthered his education at the Store Keeper School in Rhode Island and later was stationed in Iceland. After his honorable discharge, Donald attended Rivier College in Nashua where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Business.
Mr. Mayo began his career in retail management for the former W.T. Grants at Simoneau Plaza and Almy’s department store at the Nashua Mall. In January 1979, Donald became an agent and underwriter for New York Life Insurance Company and founded Donald M. Mayo & Associates in Nashua.
Donald was a life-member of the Million Dollar Round Table of New York Life and was a member of the New Hampshire Association of Life Underwriters and served on its Board of Directors. A communicant of St. Patrick Church, he was active with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society; was a former CCD teacher at Immaculate Conception Parish and was a 1st Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11907. In his leisure time, Donald enjoyed spending time with his family, especially walks at the beach with his beloved wife and his grandsons, as well as attending his grandsons’ numerous sporting events and performances.
Members of his family include his wife, Cynthia F. (Greenwood) Mayo, whom he married on November 5, 1966 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; his children, Ann E. M. Peters and her husband Michael, and Dawn M. Mayo all of Nashua, and Jonathan Mayo of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren, Nathan Terrin, Matthew Terrin, Zachary Peters, Alexander Peters, Amanda Terrin Sztoltz and Stephen Terrin; a brother, Dr. Richard A. Mayo and his wife Victoria of Bluffton, SC; a sister, Carol L. Nichols and her husband Raymond of Merrimack; also nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Donald was also predeceased by a sister, Judy Mayo; and a grandson, Patrick Joseph Terrin.
Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Friday, January 13th from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Patrick Church, 29 Spring Street, Nashua on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Friends are invited to attend and will gather at the church. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date.
