GREENWOOD, JOHN

It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of John Greenwood of Nashua, NH, with his wife, Sonia Ascher, and his older son, Jeremy, at his side. He was 83.

Born in Bradford, England, May 25, 1938 to Wright and Lucy (Robertshaw) Greenwood, John spent his youth in Keighley, England. An exceptional student, he attended Manchester University earning an M.Sc. in Mathematics. He then worked at Lucas Engineering and for British Aerospace on the Concord airplane.

In 1965, John married Florence Margaret Naylor and moved to Guisborough to start a family fathering two sons, Jeremy and Alastair. He became a college lecturer and then head of the science department at the technical college in Redcar, England.

An avid cricket player, he had trials for Yorkshire county cricket club and played regularly for Guisborough cricket club. He supported Guisborough FC and enjoyed following the sports for the rest of his life.

After Margaret died from complications arising from Multiple Sclerosis in 2001, John began traveling extensively all over the world. In 2011 whilst on a Road Scholar circumnavigation of South America, he met Sonia Claire Ascher of Nashua. Sonia and John were married in 2012 and John moved permanently to the US. John became step-father to Barry, Nathan and Matthew Sanel and four step grandchildren.

His life was filled with adventure and a great love of travel. He was a true gentleman, kind, soft-spoken, and exceptionally intelligent. His droll sense of humour often caught people by surprise. He was universally liked and made friends wherever he went.

John will be deeply missed by his family and many others who loved him so much. We all carry a hole in our heart from his passing.

The family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Funeral services will be private. Dear Sonia, John is now on a journey we know nothing about, but I suspect he is taking it with curiosity and excitement. I am honored to have met him and to have seen the two of you being happy together--something you both were worthy of each and every day. May your fondest memories of your years together carry you through these times of grief and loss. Blessings to you and your family always.
