RODNEY A. MARTONE

July 22, 2016
Martone, Rodney A.

Rodney Anthony Martone, 65, of Nashua, NH passed away at St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by his family on Friday, July 22, 2016 after a lifetime of heart and kidney problems.

He was the son of John and Aida Martone and grew up in North Andover, MA. He attended Central Catholic High School and Merrimack College where he was known for his booming voice and love of life. He lived in Nashua for his entire married life and enjoyed the youth sports it afforded his family.

He was the beloved husband for 41 years of Patricia Pohlot Martone. They were married on June 14, 1975 and lived their lives in love. Together they had three children: Christopher Andrew who married Lauren Thomas in 2012 and gave him a wonderful grandchild Carter, Kathryn Ann married to Mike Letter in 2009 and together they gave him two beautiful grandchildren Michael and Natalie, and Stephen Anthony who married Angela Romano in 2011. Rod loved his family and was always happy when his children and grandchildren were in the house. The sound of the laughter and chaos always made him smile even when he was sick. He was a loving husband and dedicated father and raised his children with love and taught them to be kind, compassionate and have strong moral principles.

Rod lived his life with humor and respect for others. Everywhere he went he made people smile and remember the “godfather” as he called himself.  He loved to talk about his Boston teams, especially the Celtics and some of his favorite memories were going into games with his boys. He was a spirited fan and let his enthusiasm be known. Basketball was a big part of his life and he coached recreational teams and CYO basketball for Immaculate Conception Parish for 30 years. His happiest years were when he was coaching three teams at a time and giving all the referees, especially his great friend Gerry Gadbois a hard time as he refereed the games. He also enjoyed umpiring when his children were young and had no problem striking out his own sons. His children are proud that they can call him their father. He will be missed every day.

Besides his wife, children, and grandchildren he is survived by his mother Aida Martone, sister Maureen Hibbard and her husband Kevin of Naples, Florida, a brother-in-law Joseph Pohlot and his wife Nancy of Mission Viejo, CA, a brother-in-law Bruce Pohlot and wife Helen of Doylestown, PA as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Wednesday July 27th from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 216 East Dunstable Road, Nashua, Thursday morning at 10 o’clock.  Friends are invited to attend and will gather at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Immaculate Conception CYO Basketball. Arrangements are in the care of the FARWELL FUNERAL SERVICE. Dear Martone Family, I'm sorry this message is so late but I just heard about Rod's passing over this past weekend. One of Rod's former players (our youngest Son, Mike) informed me on Sunday, August 14. I am one of the basketball referees that Rod gave a hard time to but since Rod was also a basketball official, his taunts toward me were always good-natured. I have been out of touch with Rod for a number of years but both of my boys played youth basketball and baseball under his tutelage. I will always remember Rod as a stand up, honest man with very high moral principles. He was great coach, a great human being and, I'm sure, a great husband, father and grandfather. Please accept our family's deepest sympathies for your loss. We need more Rod Martones in our crazy world !! With Condolences, Dennis Farrell and the entire Farrell Family (Jane, Shawn, Kelly & Mike)

Rod will surely be missed. I think one of my first games I officiated in the Nashua CYO Rod was one of the coaches. Not knowing each other he tested me. As an official you learn to keep your composure. But Rod would test you (in a good way). Once he got to know you and you got to know him it was all respect at that point. From there I would see Rod often at CYO games and he made it a point to get to know you and your name and let you know how well or not well you were officiating. But by all standards he made it a point to get to know everyone. He was one of the most positive influences that I have been associated with. Rod will be dearly missed. My condolences. God Bless. Rod's passing is a truly sorrowful event. He was a warm, funny and passionate man, passionate especially about family - and basketball. When we were young, and could still get up and down the court, Rod set up a game between his team and mine. His team won, and he never let me forget it - but always in fun and friendship. Rod's marriage to Patty was a special union, and I was lucky enough to be there when they tied the knot. That was a joyous occasion, and it is clear that they carried that joy throughout their married life, even through difficult times. There is no doubt that Rod will be missed, but his impact on those around him, particularly his family, will live on. May he rest in peace.

When I first moved to Nashua 30 plus years ago, Rod was one of the first people I met and we've been friends ever since. We had some knock down basketball games in the circle together, we coached together (okay, for different teams but at the same time) and against each other, we refereed together and we worked in CYO together. He was always a big hit at Halloween! I am proud to have called him a friend and can truly say I am a better person for having had the pleasure to know him. I love you and will miss you man. Pat, Chris, Kathryn and Steve my thoughts and prays are with you.

My thoughts and Prayers are with the Martone Family. Rod was a wonderful man and one I was so fortunate to have known. Of course I met Rod through CYO basketball. He was instrumental in mentoring me my first year in charge of the mites league. I would have to chase him down every year for his teams. One year in particular I had a hard time getting a hold of him we joked that I was about to start checking the Nashua hospitals for him. We always had to meet at the “chapel” aka Dunkins and inevitably he would be asking for an exemption or a substitution or secretly sizing up his teams vs mine. It is a competitive game after all and no one knew that more than Rod. But I had the distinct pleasure of watching him coach kids over the years and being incredibly envious of his knowledge of the game, his style on and off the court. He was a master storyteller it wouldn’t take long in a room full of coaches til we had gathered round and listened to how he coached in one game put on his stripes and filled in to referee the next one. The cornerstone of all his stories was always his family, his children, and his wife. I will never pass the chapel without thinking of him or step onto the court every season and not expect that voice behind me and I truly love that the family named Immaculate Conception CYO basketball in his obituary as that program was his life’s passion.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Martone's entire family during this time of loss. Rod gave so much to the youth and families of Immaculate Conception with his 30 years of coaching. He had an uncanny ability to know when to be tough on a player or to go a little easier on him and that is something that cannot be taught. His coaching, mentoring and the friendships he fostered will forever be a part of the fabric of this Parish. Rod will be sorely missed by everyone that knew him and he will continue to bring a smile to a lot of faces whenever they see a young person playing basketball. Rest in Peace COACH!! Coach - you were a dear friend and my mentor. I will forever hold a special place for you in my heart. I enjoyed the few short years we coached CYO together for those memories will last forever. Your lessons on and off the court will be carried on by all who knew you. The world will be a lonely place without you. Rest in Peace my friend

Our deepest sympathy to all of you. Rod was a very special person - a great influence on the many kids he coached throughout the years. We know he made a big impression on Paul, who always kept us up-to-date on "Mistah Mahtone".

Our most sincere condolences to the Martone family. We are deeply sorry for your loss. I'm sure that Rod's vibrant personality will be greatly missed at home. Rod, as well as Steve, coached our 3 sons in Immaculate Conception basketball. Rod always played the tough guy act, but it was so evident that he was extremely soft-hearted and a very dedicated man, both to his family and to Immaculate Conception Parish. As Rod was preparing for his transplant, I remember how overwhelmed and touched he was by the attendance at a special Mass that was planned for him. He was very well liked, especially by the young men that he coached. May the happy memories that you share help you through this difficult time.
