Thomas Michael Madden, 85, of Litchfield, NH, previously of South Yarmouth, Wilmington, and Everett MA passed away peacefully at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center on July 8, 2023 after a brief illness.

Tom was born to the late Michael and Mary Madden of Everett, MA. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Suzanne M. (Russell); his siblings: Margaret Madden, Mary Kearney, Josephine Graves and John Madden; as well as his grandson, Michael T. Nye-Madden.

He is survived by his three daughters: Kathleen A. Madden and partner, Marilyn Olger; Lisa K. Madden and wife, Mary Boucher; and Kristine M. Powers and husband, Kevin J. Powers, Sr. He was a cherished grandfather to Tonya Nugent and family, Edward Elinburg, Lanse M. Nye-Madden, Nicholas M. Boucher, Kevin J. Powers, Jr. and Colin M. Powers; and an uncle to many nieces and nephews. Tom was a devoted family man, he was very proud of his children and grandchildren, he did not hesitate to boast about them at every opportunity. He attended countless sporting events, concerts, recitals, and birthday parties.

Tom was born to Irish immigrants seeking safety and opportunity in America. The study of Irish history, culture and music was a lifelong passion for him. He was very proud of his ancestry and could talk for hours about the “old country”. He graduated from Everett High School and a few years later secured a job at the MBTA.  Tom started as a bus driver and retired as an inspector of construction for the MBTA.  Tom and Sue raised their family in Wilmington, MA, then they retired to South Yarmouth, MA.

He enjoyed his second career working at St. Pius X Church. He worked there for 23 years helping to coordinate hundreds of meals and activities for the community. He was most famous for his delicious clam chowder. Tom was a devout Catholic. He often stated his faith was his source of strength and comfort throughout his life. A significant highlight in his life was being awarded the Marion Metal in 2000. He received this award from Cardinal O’Malley, when he was the Bishop of Fall River Dioseses, for Tom’s exceptional contribution to the activities at St. Pius X church.

After his wife passed away in 2013, Tom moved to Litchfield, NH to be closer to family. He became Papa to everyone; he enjoyed many adventures with family and friends. He especially loved having “breakfast with the boys”. Tom was a faithful New England sports fan, he loved to play golf with his family and friends.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 10 a.m. at St. Kathryn Church, 4 Dracut Road in Hudson, NH. Tom will be laid to rest with Suzanne at Chandler Grey Cemetery in West Yarmouth, MA at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Tom was a long time supporter of those living with mental illness, developmental and intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. Tom was such a wonderful person. He always shared funny, heartwarming stories with us ladies at Shear Class. He was always a shining light, he made us smile and we really just adored every appointment he had. He always teased that one day, he’d let me color his hair green to represent his Irish heritage. Tom always commented on how much he loved my art and how creative I was. I was grateful to draw something he gifted to his grandson… “Remember to eat the peas.” I absolutely loved the story behind it. I’ll always cherish those conversations. Rest in peace, Tom.

Lisa, and the rest of the Madden family...I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Tom sounds like a marvelous man and I wish I had the opportunity to have known him. I’m a firm believer that when we lose someone close to us, like a father, they continue to live on through us and give us unbelievable strength. They’re so connected to us that they become a part of us.

Those who knew him will miss a great man and a most talented story teller. He would often make time to share a “wee tale” when ever the opportunity rose, much to the delight of his listener’s. I missed his presence when he left the Cape, ready to be a blessing to his family and whom ever he touched on his new journey to New Hampshire.May he be welcomed by the angels . Lorayne Mace

Dear Kristine, Lisa, Kathy and Family, Both your parents were pivotal parts of my childhood as I feel like I was at your house as much as I was at my own. One of my fondest memories was your Dad taking us Christmas caroling around the neighborhood and Deming Way. But there are so many… I am so very sorry for your loss. May there be some comfort that he is reunited with your wonderful Mother. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, as well as my love and friendship.

Tom was the first person to introduce himself to me when I moved into Annandale and helped secure a place to park my van as I was working. He was that kind of man always wanting to help. We were due to go to breakfast before his illness and I said can’t wait to hear his stories. I respected him so much and was privileged to have known him.

Tom was a true credit to our community in Annandale On The River. I would walk my dog Kacey by him on the front porch and stop to visit. Kacey was always happy to see him and I loved our little talks, just sittin and rockin. He was as nice a person as you could find anywhere. Always happy. He will be missed! Jim and Kacey
