Thomas Michael Madden, 85, of Litchfield, NH, previously of South Yarmouth, Wilmington, and Everett MA passed away peacefully at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center on July 8, 2023 after a brief illness.
Tom was born to the late Michael and Mary Madden of Everett, MA. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Suzanne M. (Russell); his siblings: Margaret Madden, Mary Kearney, Josephine Graves and John Madden; as well as his grandson, Michael T. Nye-Madden.
He is survived by his three daughters: Kathleen A. Madden and partner, Marilyn Olger; Lisa K. Madden and wife, Mary Boucher; and Kristine M. Powers and husband, Kevin J. Powers, Sr. He was a cherished grandfather to Tonya Nugent and family, Edward Elinburg, Lanse M. Nye-Madden, Nicholas M. Boucher, Kevin J. Powers, Jr. and Colin M. Powers; and an uncle to many nieces and nephews. Tom was a devoted family man, he was very proud of his children and grandchildren, he did not hesitate to boast about them at every opportunity. He attended countless sporting events, concerts, recitals, and birthday parties.
Tom was born to Irish immigrants seeking safety and opportunity in America. The study of Irish history, culture and music was a lifelong passion for him. He was very proud of his ancestry and could talk for hours about the “old country”. He graduated from Everett High School and a few years later secured a job at the MBTA. Tom started as a bus driver and retired as an inspector of construction for the MBTA. Tom and Sue raised their family in Wilmington, MA, then they retired to South Yarmouth, MA.
He enjoyed his second career working at St. Pius X Church. He worked there for 23 years helping to coordinate hundreds of meals and activities for the community. He was most famous for his delicious clam chowder. Tom was a devout Catholic. He often stated his faith was his source of strength and comfort throughout his life. A significant highlight in his life was being awarded the Marion Metal in 2000. He received this award from Cardinal O’Malley, when he was the Bishop of Fall River Dioseses, for Tom’s exceptional contribution to the activities at St. Pius X church.
After his wife passed away in 2013, Tom moved to Litchfield, NH to be closer to family. He became Papa to everyone; he enjoyed many adventures with family and friends. He especially loved having “breakfast with the boys”. Tom was a faithful New England sports fan, he loved to play golf with his family and friends.
Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 10 a.m. at St. Kathryn Church, 4 Dracut Road in Hudson, NH. Tom will be laid to rest with Suzanne at Chandler Grey Cemetery in West Yarmouth, MA at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 13, 2023.
Tom was a long time supporter of those living with mental illness, developmental and intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders.
