Veda Ann (Noel) Henry

September 15, 2022
HENRY, VEDA A.

Veda Ann (Noel) Henry was called home on September 15th, 2022, surrounded by her loving family in her home. Veda was born on December 14, 1941 in York, Pennsylvania. She attended local grade and high school and loved singing in the choral group. After high school, she attended Millersville University in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and received a degree in education. She then taught elementary school in York, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland, and Alburgh, VT as part of the teacher corp. She earned her Master of Education degree from the University of Vermont, and then taught at Juvenile Hall in Orange California.

Veda met and married her beloved husband Edgar Henry Jr. (Sam) on October 28, 1972. She and Sam had two sons, Edgar III and Joseph while living in Des Plaines, Illinois. The family lived in Des Plaines and Alburgh, Vermont before settling in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1982.

For thirty-five years, Veda taught at the Adult Learning Center in Nashua. She loved her students and even after retiring continued tutoring until one month prior to her death. She loved working with students who needed her help the most. Veda was a committed volunteer at the Nashua Food Pantry, donating vegetables from their family garden. Veda attended Arlington Street Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. She loved attending church suppers, craft fairs, and her church community.

Veda was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Sybella Noel and her brother K. Robert Noel of York, PA. She is survived by niece Jan Noel Gumerlock, niece Nan Noel, nephew Jon and (wife) Liz Noel, sister-in-law Ann Noel, a beloved aunt Faye Kinley and Uncle Rod, and many cousins.

Veda was loving, kind, forgiving, polite, and the sweetest wife and mother. She loved her family dearly. Veda’s glitter was from the inside, she always looked out for others and was as reliable as the sun and stars. She hosted weekly Sunday family dinners for more than 20 years after her sons moved out. She will be dearly missed by her community and family, but most of all by her husband, Sam, and their two sons, Sam and Joe.

Veda was an avid reader and loved to write letters. She kept in contact with more than twelve college friends for more than 50 years, with countless cards, letters, emails, and reunions. Even during her recent illness, she never missed a birthday, sending cards and letters to all she loved. She enjoyed buying gifts and perfectly wrapping them for all occasions. She loved to plant and care for her flowers, especially Zinnias. She will be buried holding a small bouquet of the Zinnias she planted and tended this summer. She never showed up empty handed to any gathering, and frequently made a Pennsylvania Dutch dish to share.

The family would like to thank Home Health and Hospice Care of Merrimack, NH for their loving and supportive hospice care. Her final wish was to pass at home surrounded by her family, and this was possible due to their support. Sam and his sons would also like to thank their niece Willow “the paragon of healthcare” and nephew Kevin Henry, for providing round the clock care to keep her comfortable in her final days.

Calling hours will be held at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock Street, Nashua on Monday, September 19th from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral service will be held in the Arlington Street United Methodist Church, 63 Arlington Street, Nashua, Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at the Henry Farm Family Cemetery, Henry Road in Alburg, Vermont, Thursday, Sept. 22nd  at 11 a.m. All are welcome to attend at all locations. Veda’s obituary perfectly captures her gentle and kind ways. Veda had a wonderful smile and a good sense of humor. She was always fun. Veda was a devoted teacher and despite a busy schedule she had many hobbies to which she was also devoted. She so loved her husband Sam and her two sons. She spoke of them often.

My sincere sympathy to Sam and the boys. Veda and I were in college together. Several of us have kept in touch via a Round Robin letter. since we graduated in 1963 and I was honored to hear from Veda as part of that group. We shared a career interest in adult education. May her legacy be the students she inspired and educated.

Dear Sam and Sons: I was shocked and very sad when Dotty called and gave me the bad news. My condolences to you and all her family and friends. I was one of the chain letter members.

I had the honor of working with Veda at the Adult Learning Center for nearly a decade. She was one of the most dedicated educators I have known. She approached each student with unwavering kindness and patience. There is no question that there are countless students whose lives are better today because of her. She will be greatly missed.

This is Carol Jean again to finish the former condolence message. If it weren't for these kind notes and letters, I don't think I would have made it. When she mentioned being operated on for cancer, I never gave it a second thought. I never knew how she was suffering In all these notes she never mentioned her cancer had returned. I should have been comforting Veda, not the other way round.

Dear Sam, Her Two Sons and all Relatives and Friends 0f Veda. I can't say it any better than all the friends and relatives above have. I guess you only knew Veda since she moved to Nashua, but I went to West York High and Millersville University and have kept in touch with her ever since through our round Robin letters. She has sent me note after note and letter after letter recently because ever since my husband's death and (like many widows before me) I've had so much work to do that everything seems like a chore. How understanding those notes were!

Veda was one of the first people I met when I started at the Adult Learning Center 20 plus years ago. I was impressed with the kindness she exhibited not only to her students but to her fellow teachers and staff at the ALC. Her students loved her! She gave so much of herself to ensure her students were successful. Even in retirement she still gave back by tutoring. You will be missed. In summer, we could always count on a visit from Veda sharing her prize tomatoes! I shall miss her smiling face! Rest In Peace

I grew up with Vera’s son, Joe. She was always so nice when I would visit their home. She had such a welcoming and caring way to her. Hearing of her loss shook me more than I thought it would. My condolences to Joe, Sam, & Sam.

You made Nashua immediately feel like home when we moved here more than 20 years ago. Countless family BBQs on your patio and holidays spent together. You were a more of a “bonus grandmother” to my girls in so many ways. We love you and will miss you dearly. Rest In Peace sweet Veda. With Love. Willow, Kevin, Jaden, and Kena Henry

Time, colleagues, and friends may pass, but memories of your kindness linger in the hallways and classrooms of the Adult Learning Center and pass to new generations of students from all of us who remember your kindnesses to us.

I first met Veda when she took me under her wing my first year at the Adult Learning Center. She supervised the Adult Education teachers and proceeded to teach me everything she could to help me succeed. She was always there for me, the teachers, and all her students. Dear Veda was so loving and kind, so patient and helpful, such an excellent teacher, so thoughtful and generous, and a friend to all. My life is richer because of her friendship. She will always live in my heart. Diana Owen
