He graduated Donegal High School in 1969, with acceptances to the Merchant Marine Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, and United States Military Academy.  He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, where he established a lifelong brotherhood with several of his classmates and on June 6, 1973, he graduated.  He served with the Army from 1973 to 1978, and had been stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas with the Headquarters 3/6 Field Artillery – 1st Infantry Division and holding the rank of Captain. Navy games, NFL games, or his son and later, grandson’s high school football games.  He loved spending time with his family and adored quality time with his “magnificent seven” grandchildren. He loved traveling, including leisurely drives to the Maine coastline or big island adventures to the Bahamas, one of his favorite island destinations.

So sad and sorry to hear about Bud’s passing. Bud lived across the hall from us in North Barracks when I was a plebe and Bud was a yearling in I4. In total we spent 3 years together in I4, the last over in the Lost 50s where Bud could always be seen meeting the love of his life, Nancy Formato. I4 was the last company in the Corps and had more than its share of “colorful” people. Bud was one! Always happy and full of sage advice, Bud was a true friend. Always liked giving him little hints on how to keep out of trouble and survive in an Italian American family. My sincere condolences to Nancy and the rest of the Rolfs family. Bud will be missed by all that knew him

Nancymarie and Loved Ones, I was a Bud financial newsletter customer a while back. Besides his great newsletter I always enjoyed Buds end of the year Christmas poems. What a beautiful story and legacy Bud leaves here on earth. RIP Bud a great man. Hector Castillo Murrieta, California

Bud, my West Point roommate and dear friend, what can I say? Bud married the love of his life, Nancymarie, and every day was special for Bud because of Nan. He truly loved his adopted Italian family, the Formatos. Bud especially enjoyed taking his classmates to a Frieda Formato Sunday dinner where the patriarch, Tony, tossed fried meat balls to the hungry guests, and bocce ball in the back yard was cut-throat. Bud was proud of his two children, their spouses, and their accomplishments. He was also the proudest grandfather on the planet. The grandkids were the light of his life during the most difficult years. Even during the tough times, Bud never complained. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a special wit about him. Bud set a Christian example and was a role model for us all. My brother Bud, what can I say? Thank you for sharing your love. Joe B

Though I lost touch with Bud after leaving West Point, I remember our time together well as classmates in company I-4, the “Hungry I.” Bud was a gentle soul with a warm heart. And how we shared doubling over laughing at crazy Kreitner’s hilarious antics. My understanding is Bud was strong in faith. So God has him now. Peaceful. May that knowledge comfort his family as they grieve his loss.

Wow! Life on earth is short no matter how long we’re here. Bud was a special childhood friend to me whom I haven’t seen in 49 years. My deepest regrets, although we connected and conversed in recent years through social media. I’m grateful that one day our friendship will continue in a much better place under much better circumstances. May the Lord grant Nancymarie and family great peace and comfort in this difficult time.

Bud was the beloved Music Man to us, his classmates in West Point's Company I-4, Class of 1973. Simply one of the finest persons one could ever be privileged to meet and to know, Bud enriched the lives of us all and created memories that we shall treasure forever. Our hearts go out to his wonderful and devoted spouse, Nancymarie, his children and their spouses, and his "Magnificent Seven" grandchildren. The pain you are feeling is so great because the love between Bud and each of you is so deeply felt. May your cherished memories ease the pain a bit as time goes on.
