Walter Armand “Wally” Matte of Nashua, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, December 22, 2022 at St. Joseph Hospital after 75 years of a full life with numerous friends, family and adventures.
A longtime Nashua resident, he was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on May 16, 1947, a son of the late Walter Bernard and Rita G. (Ninteau) Matte. Wally was a high school graduate with college credits he earned during his career as a machinist.
Wally was employed with Hollis Engineering and Cooper Industries for over 30 years.
Wally leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary M. “Peggy” (Diggins) Matte, whom he married on May 15, 1970 and shared over 52 years together; his sons, Peter J. Matte of Nashua and Gregory S. Matte and his wife Bridget of Bolton, MA; three grandchildren, Brittney L. Matte and her fiancé Angelo Soares of Nashua along with Nicholas S. Matte and Justin Velez (deceased) of Bolton, MA; five great-grandchildren, A.J., Julie, Mason, Makenzie and Landen Soares; a sister, Pauline Alphonse of New Baltimore, Michigan, two brothers, William “Billy” Matte of Nashua and the late Edward R. Matte; cousin Claire Vallante and her husband Carmen of Dracut, MA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Diana and Barry Isaacs of Leland, SC, Kathy Urquhart of Hudson, NH, Janet and Frank Prince of Nashua and Frances Griffin of Natick, MA; nieces and nephews, Roger Fugere, Steven and Matthew Isaacs, Alan, Chris, Kevin and Sean Urquhart, Amanda Dover, Candace Brickey, Carl Johnson, Kyle Griffin, Edward and John Matte; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews; great friends, John and Terry Grygel, John and Terry Walega, Andre and Paula Guillmette, Mike Sullivan and Lance Minnich; his bonus daughter Debra Gregory and her husband Ian of Merrimack, NH. Walter loved the pets he cared for in his life including beloved dogs Becka, Vikna, Becky-Sue, Samantha, Nick, Cybil and Lizzie B. along with Charlie the cat.
In his leisure time, he loved hunting, fishing and spending time at his property in Vermont. Wally had special interests in reading, history, astronomy, music and photography. He enjoyed sharing these interests with family and friends. Wally’s life included plenty of travel including over 25 cruises to destinations including Bermuda, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Venezuela and Mexico with his wife Peggy and their friends.
