Thomas C. Cassin

CASSIN, THOMAS C obit photo

Thomas Conway Cassin unwillingly took his last breath on the morning of January 20th, 2024-as he had lived; on his own terms, at home surrounded by family, with a twinkle in his eye and his spirit intact.

Widowed early, Tom devoted his life to working hard to provide for his four daughters; in return, after an unpropitious second marriage, his daughters devoted their time to being his caretakers and are grateful for the quality time together at the family homes in Nashua and Europe. Tom was pre-deceased by his wife, love of his life and mother to his girls Patricia (Vanderlosk) Cassin; his eldest daughter, Karen Lee Weeks; his sister, Nancy Cassin; and his two lower legs.

Tom started out in life in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas J. Cassin and Mary Conway, a longtime Lowell teacher and one of the first female graduates of Boston University.  Tom himself was a proud graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, where he was the baseball catcher under famed coach Jack Barry.

Tom retired as Vice President of Sales from Pitco/Blodgett Corporation after 50 years of charming his colleagues with his wit and wisdom in the commercial appliance industry.  Tom considered his co-workers family and his Reps, Dealers, and customers in the industry to be some of his closest friends.

Tom was deeply involved in NAFEM-The North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers, serving on its Board of Directors for 6 years.   He received NAFEM’s highest industry honor in 2007 when he was presented with the William W. Carpenter Award by Carol Wallace, President of NAFEM.  He also received the Market Mover award in 2001 from the Manufacturers’ Agents for the Foodservice Equipment

Industry, among many other awards and acknowledgements from his peers.

Tom’s favorite things included his hero, Joe Biden, his intellectual muse, Rachel Maddow, an impeccably knit sweater, reading anything, jelly donuts from Crosby’s Bakery, Friendly Fribbles and a love of Christmas (there were never enough decorations!).   He traveled the world, including his many trips to Europe and a favorite; being wheeled through a three-week safari in Africa by sons-in-law, Big Jim and Philip.

Tom spent Christmas of 2021 with his entire family in Salzburg, Austria.  We all pleasantly reminisced about a prior Segway ride in Austria that Tom took which ended with his broken hip.   What a trip they both were!

Tom would stop to help anyone at the drop of a hat and graciously open his home, which became the favorite gathering spot for his and his daughter’s many family and friends whom he prioritized.

Tom is survived by a brother, James Cassin, and his wife, Joan of Lowell, Massachusetts.

Three daughters and their spouses: Sandra Dei Dolori (Philip) of Ogunquit, Maine,  Michelle Cassin (James Reed) of Nashua, NH, and Kristen Cassin-Dubord (James) of Nashua, NH.

Tom had six grandchildren: Dr. Emily Weeks Graham and her husband Matt, Wyatt Weeks, Owen Weeks, James Cassin-Reed and his wife Lauren, Myles Cassin-Reed, and Olivia Dei Dolori.

In the nick of time, Tom met his first great-grandson, the little nugget Jones Cassin-Reed, born December 14th, 2023.

At the family home, an Irish wake, with laughter and stories of Tom’s legendary adventures, will be held on Thursday, January 25th from 5-8pm.

Tom was a life-long Democrat.  In place of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute or The Planned Parenthood Federation of America because, as Tom would say, “They are both wonderful organizations and don’t forget to deduct it on your taxes!”

His Funeral Mass and Burial will be private, to be held on Saturday, January 27th at 10am at St. Christopher’s Parish in Nashua NH.

We are left with the bittersweet realization that even in death, Tom’s spirit will forever live in our hearts and undoubtedly in the donut shops he frequented.  We love you dad and will miss you terribly. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.farwellfuneralservice.com The Farwell Funeral Service, 18 Lock Street, Nashua, is assisting the family with arrangements.

I first met Tom in 1984 some 40 years ago at a job interview at Pitco in Concord NH. I never realized that he would become my boss, mentor, friend , colleague and eventually father in law. He helped me so graciously and inauspiciously during my career. He helped me when I was down and encouraged me to overcome obstacles. He was the master of overcoming adversity. He was the toughest and nicest guy I have ever met. I am overwhelmed with sadness but, I can hear him saying “ buck up and carry on”. Will do General …

I was fortunate to have spent the majority of my career working with Tom. We traveled to many places, had lots of fun and sold a lot of fryers along the way. Some of the lingering memories were of our trips to NYC in my early days. From steaks at Gallaghers, Italian at Patsys, carousing with Georgie D and Big Eddie P , to hanging with freaks and punk rockers at the Limelight, it was all memorable. Tom had a gruff exterior and a huge heart of gold. Occasionally, if very irked, he would conjure the famous fist pound. Man, that was like Thor’s hammer coming down. He was my teacher, mentor and friend. RIP Buddy

Tom was the most amazing person, with Tom you had a friend for life. We always looked forward to him coming up to Canada to work with us and our customers, who all loved and respected FRYER TOM. Will always be remembered in our hearts.

So sorry for your loss Sandy, Michelle, and Kris. I have lots of memories of Mr. C, having lived across the street on Charlotte from 1975-1990. I would have loved to come see you ladies at the Irish restaurant take; I have some reminiscences that I feel like can only be shared at such a venue, not here on this board. Just know I have you in my thoughts, with a smile on my face thinking of the permanent twinkle your father had in his eyes while trying to keep control of his household, vastly outnumbered by the overwhelming female element. Rest in peace Mr. C.

Tom was absolutely one of a kind. He helped us put Pitco on the map in Canada and became known as Fryer Tom to many of our customers. Tom pretended to be gruff but was a gentle soul who only wanted to help everyone else. Rest in peace, my friend.

I have a great respect and admiration for Tom when I was coming up in the industry. Over time, we created a friendship and would look for each other at trade shows. Our discussions were always cordial and he would always end our meetings by saying “ leave me some crumbs.” ( meaning don’t take all the fryer business). Will miss you Tom. Sincere condolences to the family.

Hi Phil, Condolences for Tom We are going to miss him! He contributed so importantly to my successful career. In January 2005 in Miami MAFSI event I ran into Tom in the convention center hallway. He grabbed my arm and took me to the pay phones on the wall. “Yes, Payphone’s” He called you and you kept me on the phone till I agreed to come see you at Pitco! You both persuaded me to join Pitco & Blodgett, and changed the trajectory of my life! Tom invited me into his office to share all his experience, he opened his office closet and said I could have access to all his training materials, documents, and presentations anytime! The support from you both improved the quality of my family’s life! Tom helped many people in our industry and set an example of how to conduct oneself professionally! I do know and believe that after one passing, The Holy Spirit visits every Soul and asks, “Do you want to join me in Heaven?” Tom asks, “ what do you have up there Pitco or Frymaster?” Holy Spirt said, “Tom we have Both” Tom said, YES, let’s roll!” Cheers to an amazing life lived! Love you Brother! Chef Tim

Tom, you lived a good life with very high moral and ethical standards. You took good care of your family, and you were dedicated to your employer, Pitco/Blodgett. No one could ask for more from a person. You will be missed by many and I am thankful to have known you and to have worked with you. Now, as you are having a traditional Irish wake, I send to you a traditional Irish blessing which I learned from Denis Hogan, our mutual friend and customer in Ireland. With a glass of Paddy in my hand I say to you: — May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields, And, until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand. — Rest well, Jon

I worked with Tom at Pitco. He was a great mentor and always provided me guidances. He told you what you needed to hear, not always what you wanted to hear. He was an icon in our industry and clearly a beloved family man. You don't come across individuals like Tom very often. My heart goes out to his family. He will be missed and thought about with find memories.

My first interview with Tom was in 1982 in a jail cell (the cell was in the restaurant in Concord NH). That interview weekend brought me into my food service equipment career starting with Pitco. Tom was my teacher, mentor and then great friend for over 3 decades.. Everyone I spoke to during and after our working time together only had great words to say about Tom, no one ever said anything that was not complimentary. His honesty and caring of people was infectious, he was always there to help anyone and always with a smile. The industry and world has lost some great people lately, Tom is one of the tops on that list. Rest in Piece my friend.

All the Cassin’s & Family - So very sorry for your loss. At the same time, so happy for you all to have the special memories you will always have of, and with him. I had the privilege to work with Tom for over 15 years and well beyond that, to enjoy his years of friendship. He was extremely well respected throughout the industry that he was so passionate about. In fact, he was not only well respected for his business, for those of us who worked with him, but even more so because of the person he was. We had many special memories as well as years of success. And both during and away from business he always talked about family with such pride. In fact just 12 days ago we exchanged notes about our holiday wishes to each other, but most importantly the pride he had in having his great grandson. What a beautiful picture together. So many happy memories as I think of Tom, but at the same time, so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you.
