Tom Dufresne

DUFRESNE, TOM Picture1

Tom Dufresne, Hollis, New Hampshire, died on April 6 after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on October 24, 1950, in Lowell, Mass, Tom was the beloved son of the late Robert and Claire (Mailloux) Dufresne. He lived his formative years in Tewksbury, Mass, and graduated from Tewksbury High School and UMass Lowell. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity while at UMass and kept in touch with his fraternity brothers throughout his life. Most of his professional career was spent in beverage sales.

Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman, both warm water and ice fishing. He and his brothers spent a lot of time together, fishing in Lake Michigan, Lake Winnipesaukee, and sometimes even Flint’s Pond in Hollis. His favorite hunting spots were in northern New Hampshire and New Brunswick, Canada.

Tom had two real passions. The first was cycling. He took this sport up initially to ride in the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) to raise money for the Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Center. He rode with his team, Nashua Rides for Hope, the first weekend in August every year. The course was 192 miles over 2 days. There were many good stories about the team and their shenanigans at the Monkey Bar in Provincetown and on the Party Boat ride back into Boston. The irony, of course, is that Tom succumbed to this dreadful disease himself. Over the course of 16 years, Tom raised over $131,000, 100% of which went directly to cancer research.

His second passion was conservation. As a member, and later Chair, of the Hollis Conservation Commission, Tom was responsible for preserving thousands of acres around Hollis from development, a remarkable and enduring legacy.

On August 10, 1974, Tom married Martha Bassett. They spent their early years in Nashua, before settling in Hollis in 1983. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this August. In addition to his wife, Martha, Tom will also be greatly missed by his two daughters, Caitlin and Margaret, and his two beloved granddaughters, Lilyth and Evelyn, who knew him as Pepere.

He is also survived by his brothers John (Claudia), Hollis, NH, and Bobby (Vicky), Nashua, NH; sisters Roberta Gasco (Stephen) Meredith, NH, Elaine Dunn (John), Merrimack, NH, and Mary Leen (Kevin), Key West, FL. In addition, Tom leaves behind his brothers-in-law Bob Bassett (Marilyn Ray), Caribou, ME, and Tom Bassett (Carol Spindel), Urbana, IL, as well as his sisters-in-law Mary Bassett (Art Giacomarra), Northborough, MA, and Annie Bienvenue (Rick) Lowell, MA. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. His youngest sister, Annette, predeceased him.

Friends may call on Thursday, April 11, 2024, from 4-7 at the FARWELL FUNERAL HOME, 18 Lock St., Nashua, NH. There will be a mass in his honor on Friday, April 12, 11 AM, at the Parish of the Resurrection, Broad Street, Nashua. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Center or the Jimmy Fund. Please donate online at www.pmc.org/BD0267 or mail to Bob Dufresne, 17 Settlement Way, Nashua, NH 03063. I just read Tom"s obituary two minutes ago and I cannot tell you and the girls how very sorry and sad I am, Therefore I did not attend his services. So many great memories for our family. Tom was always kind, funny and a pleasure to have known him. I do know how difficult this is for your family, This disease is relentless and devastating, But know that leaving you was as difficult for him as it was for you. I know your memories will never fade. Take comfort that he is no longer in pain and that he is with Frank in heaven and making it a better place! Take care and reach out if you ever feel the need.

Martha and family, So sorry to hear about Tom's passing. I saw him every year at the LHS/LTI scholarship dinner. His sense of humor was great, and I deeply admired his Pan Mass rides every year. A donation has been sent to honor him. Our sincere condolences

To Martha, Meggie, Caitlin, and the whole family, we are so sorry. Tom was a such great guy, absolutely the best of the best and he will be sorely missed. We feel so blessed to have had Tom in our lives for so many years with so many great memories spanning 55 years starting when Paula, Tommy, and Martha were college freshmen together in 1969. We still laugh remembering all the fun dinners the 4 of us had in Hollis together and then playing Whist afterwards with Team Martha/Paula always saying Tommy/Ed cheated (ummm, did we ever lose Tommy? haha). We have always admired Tom for his many years of selfless efforts on the Hollis conservation commission and as its Chairman, helping to maintain the Town's wonderful rural character still prevalent today even in the face of huge development pressures. Paula and I will both miss Tommy dearly, and he will have a place in our hearts forever. Love, Paula & Ed Makepeace

It is a sad time indeed. My sincerest condolences to all in the Dufresne clan. Among Tommy’s greatest gifts was his ability to love and his genuine appreciation of human connection – as a father, husband, brother and, in my case, a role model, boss and friend. He had a special way of making the tiniest irritants his endearing signs of humor and affection – a flick of the ear, a hot spoon on the neck, an undeserved (or maybe deserved) insult. Tommy elevated them to an artform or even a lifestyle – he was a very funny man. I will miss Tommy and I’ll remember him as one of the good guys in my world.

Oh Martha, I'm so sorry to hear about Tom. I always remember certain very funny stories he told about you when we'd see him at your house. You and he were the perfect mates. I really want to come down for his wake, but am in my first weeks of chemotherapy for breast cancer and still discovering my reactions to the drugs. I am thinking of you, your daughters and grandchildren. My heart is breaking for you.

Dear Martha, I am so very sorry for your loss. You were my cost center's manager at DEC and we enjoyed an outing at your home in Hollis. I always admired you. I wish you peace and healing. My deepest sympathies and warmest regards, Mike Philbrook

Tom was a kind, good-natured, loveable guy. He will be missed by all who knew him. I’ve been friends with his brother Bob for over 40 years, and first met Tom shortly after their Mom passed away and Bob moved in with Tom and Martha. Tom was always friendly to me and showed me many small kindnesses. He also mercilessly busted my chops, about anything, and I would have been disappointed if it had been any other way. I was fortunate to enjoy Tom’s company and his ever-present good humor on many hunting trips in Northern NH and ME over the years, along with other outdoor adventures. On one particularly memorable trip, a rainy, cold, four day, 50 mile paddle in the Allagash, I was certain that we had found the limit of his good disposition, but he continued joking through the misery. He also never let me forget that outing was my idea. That is how I will choose to remember Tom; eternally, indomitably, good-natured. I am grateful to have known him. Martha and the whole extended Dufresne family, my family’s thoughts are with you at this time of loss.

So many memories over the 34 years we were friends starting when our kids were in kindergarten. We volunteered for the Hollis Haunter House, we helped run the charity golf tournament for the Hollis Booster Club, coached our daughter's youth softball teams together and the last 15 years we rode our bikes in the Pan Mass Challenge. You and Martha invited the Piper family into the Dufresne family and we shared many fun weekends together at our lake house or your beach house. There will be a void in our lives going forward, but understand the cycle of life and are comforted to know you have a place in heaven.
